Inevitably the head gasket has gone on my BMW, total pain
Anyone have any idea how reliable they are following the head being skimmed? Car will also need timing chain and the trimmings so looking at 1500e being put into a car that is worth 3k-4K.
Its the coupe version so they are making ballpark that money.
Should i just cut my losses and sell it for 750 now if its not going to be reliable for the next 2+ years ?

If the repair is done correctly then there is no reason the car would be any less reliable then it was before.

The important thing is that the cause of the head gasket failure is sourced and repaired and that the head is also presure tested as they are prone to cracking if badly overheated.

What engine has the car got? If its the N series then the chain tensioners give trouble so I'd replace that. No reason to replace the chain unless there is a problem with it.

2litre engine in it, engine shouldnt have overheated as it was not driven much

About 4 weeks ago the hose pipe blew from the bottom of the radiator and this happened again this week. My mechanic says this is because some of the exhaust fumes are leaking into the coolant system due to the head going and this is building up pressure in the coolant system which cause the pipe to blow off.
Cany anyone verify this is true and if so should a skimmed head fix this problem or is it a sign of something much more serious?
    Thanks

The 2.0 318i s the N46 engine. The new, redesigned, chain tensioners for them are cheap from BMW.

Head gasket failure will have been down to a previous cooling issue. On modern engines, HG failure is a symptom of a problem, not a cause.

Hi I work on these day in day out is it the 2l or 1.8 model.the price u were quoted would be about right but y now get a mechanic to do it as a nixer for you we turn them type of jobs around in 2days, head off one morning send it to be skimmed collect all parts collect the head and back together.what caused it to fail, was the water pump gone or the expansion bottle leaking these are common problem.and with regard to the chain and tensioner they are fairly cheap to buy.but if its done right you won't have a problem with it.as I've said that is all we do in our place BMW and mercs and I've never seen a head go a second time after it being done.also who told u the head gasket is gone or how have you come to that conclusion
