    Hey,
I was just looking for a car charger for my laptop. Would something like this do the job or is it dodgy? Laptop is a Medion MD 96850 by the way.

    Cheers

I sold a few car and truck chargers last year. I can't find the link for the 12volt ones, only the 24volt (truck) ones. I haven't had any complaints or any come back to me. As a reseller, I don't think I would select the one that you have chosen. Couple of reasons. If it's good quality there's going to be a bit of weight in it. That goes for any aftermarket charger, universal or otherwise. If it is heavy, that's going to be a lot of pressure on the light material that makes up your lighter socket. It won't be long before it gets out of shape and nothing will sit right in it. As well as that will the bulky power block get in the way of the ashtray mechanism or your gear leaver?
Next thing is the fact that it only kicks out 65W. What if you want to use a different laptop? A bit of overhead is nice to have.

    How about this one http://www.ebay.ie/itm/90W-DC-USB-Car-Universal-Adapter-Charger-Power-4-Laptop-/320820656628?pt=UK_Computing_LaptopAccessories_PowerSupplies&hash=item4ab266b9f4

    would something like this work?
was thinking of using thicker wire to connect straight to the battery maybe solder to the ports of this instead.
last time i tried something like this it blew fuses.
i think the lighter socket in the car has too thin wires and would either melt/ignite or blow fuses.

 Just buy one that works here. The one you linked to is practically the same as the one the op was advised against
Maybe start a new thread, this is over a year old :)

    thanks
didnt want to start something that was already there.
my issue would still be that the internal wires of the car would fry
    thanks for the quick response
