Hi there. I bought a car today and plan on getting insured in the morning problem is the car is out of tax ages (may 2011) do i have to wait for the log book before i can tax and drive it legally or what way does this work? Few people said i have a month to get it taxed and can use 'a form' stamped in a garda station .. i don't know : /

Anyone? What do the actual laws say?

You usually get 10 days to 2 weeks grace. You should have your insurance disk displayed. Stick the receipt you got in the other pocket. You won't be able to tax it until you get the documentation back from Shannon, which will take a week or so. You would also be wise not to tax it until 1st Feb, as taxing it in Jan. is a waste of money imho.

I'm fairly sure you can tax it if you actually go into the tax office. I hope so cos that's what I plan on doing with my new car on Tuesday!

And pay for January as well. Madness. Also you can tax a new car online at motortax.ie. You enter the reg.no. Your pin no is the last 6 digits of your chassis no. At least thats the way its supposed to work. I won't be doing anything till after midnight on 31st January.

That's ok to do so? don't want to end up like a bloke i know ..in court over no tax (out 3 weeks) and the copper that pulled him decided he would throw not displaying L plates and no accompanied drive on top!!! He was told during the week to produce tax monday (tomorrow) the copper that pulled him today wasn't interested when he told him.. copper was quite rude about it.

I presume your referring to insurance there.
You can legally drive around for up to 10 days without displaying an insurance disc so long as you have valid insurance cover. That's to give the insurer time to issue the documents.

There is no legal entitlement to a grace period for motor tax. Legally you must have a tax disc displayed before you can use (drive or park) the car on a public road. A Garda can and will probably use his discretion so long as you're insured and not taking the proverbial by being out of tax too long but a Traffic Warden is unlikely to be so accommodating.

OP, the 1 month you refer to simply means you have until the end of the month before you incur arrears for motor tax, it's not permission to use the car at any time during the month.

I'd go along with leaving the car parked up, off the public road. If you don't use the car at any stage during Jan then you can make a declaration of non-use at a Garda station and avoid motor tax for Jan. Remember, the Garda is only witnessing that it was who you made the declaration, he's not approving what you declared as being true.

Flouting traffic laws twice in as many weeks:eek: I'm not surprised the second Garda wasn't interested in excuses .

Not until the transfer into your name is complete.

You don't need the log book , but the transfer needs to have happened.

Most replies here are correct.- legally you must display a tax disc in order to drive the car. However when i bought my car, I took a receipt from the owner in the car with me,and when I was stopped by guards I showed it to them and told them that once I got the log book that I would tax it and call into the garda station with the tax disc, and he was fine with it. This is at the guard's discretion though, its not the law AFAIK.

There is no grace period, period. You may find an understanding cop, but that is it.

Park the car up until you have the tax disc. Simples.

Since they give a new/different pin every renewal, it cannot really be the chassis no.

Chassis number is for the very first time only when the car is newly registered.

    Mine isn't brand spanking unfortunately!
I did think you could walk into the tax office and get the disc there and then but obviously not. Feck it!

My car that I'm trading in has been off the road and I called to the garda station last night to see was there any way I could drive it from my house to the garage (two exits on the M50) but no such luck!! I was hoping for a "well you should be fine but if you are stopped tell him that garda xx in shankill told you it would be ok" ah sure it was worth chancing my arm :D
