So, started off drinking pints of larger when out, then wine. But now I want to change my drink as I find pints too much in every way and wine too strong. Bottles beer is too expensive and I have never been much of a spirit drinker, but thinking of trying something new.
What is your usual, and why?

Started on Cider, progressed to vodka and tonics. Started to have progressively worse hangovers which I blamed on the vodka so switched to bottles of Miller/Bud and have been grand since:)

yeah i know bottles are a sensible option - and i enjoy them but they are sooo bloody expensive - i mean, €5 on average a pop… difficult to justify it,.

Bacardi and cranberry juice or wine... prob not much help!

Mine depends on the mood I'm in. Either blue WKD or Jack Daniels & coke. Sometimes Bulmers. I like blue WKD because it's very hard to get drunk on and I like the taste. Just started drinking JD & coke in the last couple of months, not sure why I like it. I like Bulmers because it tastes like Cidona. :D

    Mojitos!!

I drink vodka or wine. Southern Comfort and red lemonade is also a winner!

Bottles of Bud, I only drink about 4 in a night out so the cost doesn't bother me to much, would prefer to pay for bottles than waste a pint because I wouldn't drink it quick enough and it'd be all warm and gross. I feckin love Red Bull, tastes like kids medicine, so sometimes have that with vodka. I love Baileys too, yum.

G&T though I don't drink much these days. Hate pints - they're too big.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,261 ✭✭✭Sonics2k

Like Krudler, you can't beat a straight Jack Daniels with ice.

However in bars I usually have a cider or something softer, some of the flavoured Kopparbergs are quite nice, especially the strawberry and lime.

proper ones though not those crappy watered down smirnoff ones out of the thing they have at the bar these days

Summers day nothing beats bulmers with ice. A large glass (make that a few) of sav blanc, is called for weekly. If I'm out, I'll normally have wine with a few vodka shots :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,401 ✭✭✭✭x Purple Pawprints x

Ooh I dunno if I could handle straight JD.. I did shots of it at Halloween last year at home and I got very drunk very fast.

No, you have it with ice and sip it, it's lovely!

I come from a big whiskey drinking family and I'll always have a whiskey and ice when I'm out (type of whiskey depends on my mood). Always have JD at sessions cause I've a lovely aged one I fill my hipflask with :D

I love a good ale, me.

    Or a Tom Collins.

I drink very little, but when I do I like to really enjoy it.

    sometimes a baileys coffee

In the winter I usually drink half pints of various red beers and in the summer I drink bulmers on ice.

If I am drinking hard alcohol I tend to stick to rum and coke or sprite and vodka.

That'd do it alright, just put ice in and sip it, tis the way its meant to be drank, actually without ice but I prefer it with, long as it doesnt melt too much and water it down

I've noticed a few places now doing alcoholic ginger beer. Om nom nom. Had it in the UK a few months ago and didn't think you could get it here. It's super tasty, not too easy to drink.

I hate beer and wine myself. I'm quite picky about my drinks actually! But Malibu and white is lovely, as is Pernod and blackcurrant. They're both quite sweet though, which I love but lots of people hate!

    Bourbon and cola..or beer.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,154 ✭✭✭Dolbert

Good beer and red wine. Yum. :)

    I concur :)

I like the taste of whiskey but it always leaves me in a really bad mood the next day, even if I only have one drink!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,732 ✭✭✭rain on

Usually beer but I'm quite picky about what beer I'll drink. Budvar and Staropramen are my favourites at the moment and I've been getting into pale ales a bit recently, Galway Hooker is amazing. Then Jagerbombs as the night wears on. Tia Maria with coke is nice but I can't drink sweet drinks all night. I love cocktails as well but I usually drink them too quickly and make a state of myself, so I try to stay away unless I know I'll definitely only be having one or two. I like hot whiskey too especially when my da makes it for me. Love wine but only with food, as a going-out drink it gets me wayy to drunk too quickly and also makes me sleepy.

    tl;dr - ALL the drinks :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭NomadicMe

    It depends on my mood
I love vodka and slimline or vodka and soda most days and also drink Tia Maria and coke every so often when I want a change.
If I have a few quid to spare, I go down the cocktails route.

I drink Bulmers. Long necks. Can not drink pints for the life of me.

Also love a nice glass of red wine occasionally.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,405 ✭✭✭NewFrockTuesday

Its used to be wine - all the time. Then I quit drinking when I was quitting smoking. Now Im out of the woods its Becks non alcoholic beer or a really cold cider depending. I thought that when the monkey came off my back I would go back to wine, but it never happenned. Now its with a meal in a nice resturant and thats about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,713 ✭✭✭✭Novella

Most cocktails but my favourites are Mojitos and Stawberry Daquiris. Other than that, white wine or Captain Morgans with Club Orange.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,802 ✭✭✭beks101

Not a big drinker, but it's almost exclusively vodka and a mixer. Which probably accounts for the shocking hangovers

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 594 ✭✭✭chickenbutt

Depends on the mood I am in, but I love a refreshing pint of Guinness. Paulaner/Budvar/Staropramen/Galway Hooker/Blue Moon if it's on tap. If I'm feeling overly feminine I'll get a glass of wine, but I'd prefer to drink that in the privacy of my home for some odd reason. I don't think I can justify paying for a glass or two when I could get a bottle for the price of that! and I hate sugary cocktails! Well, I generally never drink cocktails when I'm out anyway. I really hate vodka, it puts me in a horrible mood.

Oh a pint of Bulmers on ice is just heaven on a summers day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,069 ✭✭✭sporina

hmm - you see i am not a spirit drinker at all. And I don't like sweet drinks.
I guess I should stick to bottled beers - I do like beer - just difficult to pay for the bottle - so expensive.

What about Martini - anyone drink it? I am lost as to what the difference is between all the various Martini products and what to drink with them.

Is Vermouth a kind of Martini? I had that once and I liked it but its sweet too if i recall correctly?

    White wine,Kopparberg berry or tequila.

Everyone is disgusted when I say my shot of choice is tequila.Salt and lemon.Yum!Plus tequila sunrises are the nicest cocktails ever.:D

Don't really drink very much. But I like cider! I love Rekorderlig. Especially the Strawberry one! Nom. Drink a bit of beer...but it makes me really bloated.

Love Mojitos too. I work in a cocktail bar and some of our own cocktails there are really great. Drink wine the odd time too. I prefer red to white.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,722 Mod ✭✭✭✭Twee.

For a night out - Southern Comfort with lime and loads of ice, pint of Carlsberg or maybe a G&T.

At home, it's some nice beers, would only have one or two if I was sitting in. There's always a selection in the fridge. This week was Franzishaner Weissbier and Erdinger Schneeweisse.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,424 ✭✭✭Storminateacup

    Vodka - vodka vodka.
Started on cider and after drinking like a camel for about a year it kind of sickened me.

Moved onto beer, it made me full and gave me hangovers.

Onto vodka and the only problem with that is the more I drink the more sober I think I am.

My favourite cocktail has a really rude name so I'm sure ya'll don't need to hear it.

Also, blue wkd red wkd Bacardi breezer and smirnoff ice poured over a pint of ice. Hmmmhmmm smexy

    Cocktail wise: Mojitos

Usual night out: I'll start out on beer, always Coors Light then I switch to vodka and west coast cooler or vodka and cranberry.

yeah I have drank vodka and cranberry in the past..

But with regards to vodka - I do not see the point of it - can someone explain to me why they drink vodka? I get very little taste from it, especially when mixed with something. And its gone in no time.
This is the other problem I have with drinking shorts - when drinking with other's who are on pints, my short is gone long before their pint - or I have to watch the pace at with I drink it so that I am not finished long before the others.

As this thread progresses, the more I think I should just stick to bottled beer, expensive and all as it is.

Could be anything, wine, alcopops, cider, baileys, bucks fizz, rum and coke, vodka and red bull or a cocktail! Or just plain water/mineral! Ha depends on the occasion!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,540 ✭✭✭Giselle

Water, apple juice or plain tonic. I've never had a hangover :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,931 ✭✭✭Ilyana

+1 on the Tom Collins! In the cocktails department, I also like Strawberry Daquiris, Cosmos and anything else fruity. Pina coladas and any other creamy drinks are not my thing.

I like a Bulmers Light at the start of the night, but any more than one and I get all bloated. After that, it'll be white wine or vodka, soda and lime. It's seen as an old lady drink but it's lovely seeing as I actually hate vodka :pac:

Malibu and red is lovely too but all that sugar gets sickly. Same goes for vodka and cranberry juice.

As for beer, I'd need to have had quite a few of the above before I'll touch it :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,974 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

Miller and a dash (not a slice!) of lime in pubs and house parties.

    Erdinger when at home!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,816 ✭✭✭Acacia

Started drinking cider and alcopops. Ah, the days when all it took was a can of Bulmer's and a Smirnoff Ice to get hammered... Anyhoo, now more than one pint of cider is sickly (especially Kopparberg, though one or two is nice), beer is far too heavy and wine gets me too drunk, too fast and with a nasty hangover. I've recently been drinking vodka, with soda water and lime. Lovely with ice, and you can barely taste the vodka (well, I can't anyway, I hate the taste of spirits.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

Jameson. Neat, on the rocks or with water.

Possibly some Captain Morgans and Diet Coke / Club Orange. (It's like liquid sweeties!)

Shot of choice - tequila baby!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

    Depends with me.
Rekorderlig or white wine if I'm out for a quiet couple in the pub.
    Red/white wine with dinner.
Morgans+Fanta or vodka, soda water and lime if I'm on a session.

I'd also have Bulmers berry/the occasional Miller on a hot day.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,673 ✭✭✭Miss Fluff

Red or white wine with a meal/at home and dependent on food.

White wine spritzer if our for a few. Coors Lights if out for the night. Vodka and Cranberry if out on aforementioned night and things start to get silly.

I find spritzers good for staying hydrated/not getting tipsy too quickly!
