Sorry for yet another what car thread.

    €6,000 to spend.

Looking to go 1.6 or less just to save a bit on the tax.

Drive around 350 miles per week ( longest part is two 120 mile round trips). Would like some level of power/comfort for the two long journeys I make.

Other than that open to any suggestions?

Ghia spec mark 2 focus. Peppy and economical and available in models that have a decent spec.

Sorry for silly question but what does mark 2 mean? Does that refer to the year

Nice looking car. How do these drive in the 1.6? Bit sluggish or pretty ok

Would you reccommend the saloon or hatchback?

Is ghia top spec? Zetec is also good spec is it?

Ghia and titanium are the only ones with the good 1.6, although English imports might be available but they are rare.

Personally I prefer the hatch, the saloons extra boot space isn't as accessible as it should be.

    350 miles a week = 18k miles.

    Diesel territory.

Get a 1.6 tdci hatchback focus in zetec or ghia trim.

    Edit,
So you want to down size to save a few € for tax?
If you are going to spend a few grand to save a few € on tax you need your head examined.
Work out your yearly tax/insurance/maintenance and in the current climate, the annual fuel bill.

    What are you currently driving?

might be hard to get something decent in diesel within my budget of €6,000

ya i like the hatchback more personally as well. The ghia and titanium are rare enough id say. Would you think the zetec in 1.6 is only an ok option?

I've read that any of the 1.4 models are best avoided?

For similar money you'll have a slightly more economical and powerful engine. Its a much nicer unit IMO.

The 1.4 isn't necessarily a bad unit, just under powered and if you like to move on you will work it hard meaning more petrol used.

At moment i have a 2001 Audi a4 diesel. Few problems costing me big repair bills and i can see more in the future so want to get rid of it.

Just thought id stick to 1.6 or smaller in the petrol.

Lot of 1.4 options out there, the 1.6 is harder to find it seems having had a search there on carzone

Use done deal or adverts instead. For you're price range they've got a better choice of realistically priced cars.

You have to go diesel for that milage.

A 1.6 petrol Focus is not peppy or economical, I had a new one as rental car last year and it was dog slow and drank petrol.

You have to have your foot planted to the floor to make progress and it drinks petrol past 3.5k revs ( which you need to be past to get any power from it)

It's 5 speed gear box is **** too, gearing way too short for motorways, drinks petrol and sounds under real pressure past 130 km/h.

I would buy a diesel OP.

Fabia VRS is a great car.

Pick up a nice one for 5k.

Good power, 130bhp, 320nm torque ( 1.6 Focus has 145nm!), 6 speed gear box, great on fuel, reliable, rare.

It's a bit of a cult car in the UK as it can be remapped to 180bhp for a few hundred euro. One of the first hot hatch Tdi's :)

Astra Sri and Vectra Sri are nice too and quick.

A ti-vct focus is well capable of 42+ MPG, and is decently peppy for what it is. I've gotten 47 on a Galway to Cork trip without too much trying. For the cost saving over a decent diesel its worth considering.

I believe it, but if you drove the Fabia or Astra diesel's above like saints you would get 55-60mpg without too much trying.

If you put your foot down, there is something there as well.

I haven't drove the Focus here, but I had a Scirocco 2.0 140 tdi and a Focus 1.6 petrol as rental cars in the last 18 months and the difference in power, fuel economy, engine refinement, is unreal, no comparison at all.

Scirocco would be relaxed, cruising and economical @ 120-140 km/h on the motorway, while the Focus is strained, noisy and drinking fuel in comparison.

That's just my experience of the two.

    18k miles in a 50mpg diesel @1.50. = €2,450
    18k miles in a 35mpg petrol @1.55 = €3,619

So with petrol being €1170 dearer, subtract the 200 odd in motor tax saving and its around €1000 more expensive to run than your current diesel.

If your A4 is costing a few hundred a year to repair on top of routine servicing, don't change.

i'm finding it hard really to decide between petrol & diesel. Head is wrecked from it :)

Were you driving the 100 or 115PS focus? And try comparing like with like outputs, you should be comparing a 1.9tdi to them. Sure I may as well compare them to the vrs in that case. What worries me would be the affect of the other 110 miles on short journeys on the dmf more so than the dpf.

    or a golf?

    Skoda?

    Any of those worth considering?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 focus lx

give a wide Birth to ford focus 1.4, dey will bleed u dry on petrol, take about 70 to fill cause petrol so dear and ull get about 400km to a tank if u leave it go rite down to petrol light,

would u think maybe peugoet? for 6,000 ud maybe get a 05 diesel, dey come in 1.4 or 1.6 hdi

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 focus lx

I would give d focus 1.4 petrol a very width birth, dey guzzle petrol, such a big car and so a small engine but big fuel tank, to fill up will cost about €70 and ull be lucky to get 400km to a tank

would u consider a peugeot 1.4 hdi or a 1,6 hdi, u mite pick a 04 or 05 for €6,000 and do well up to over 1,000 km to a tank of diesel!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,314 ✭✭✭big_drive

The 1.4 focus never seems to get a good review so best avoided. I've never driven one but have read a lot about it.

You'll get about 3870 litres of petrol for 6000euros(at todays prices)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13 focus lx

I'm trying to get rid of mine, have had it nearly 4 yrs and dread to think how much money I have wasted putting petrol into it,

Love d car but jst not d engine, maybe 1.6 petrol would be better but like if u are goin 1.6 at all would be worth trying to look out for diesel!
