Is Robbie Keane "world class" in your opinion?

Don't know what it is about Robbie Keane but I am sure most would see it the way I do - he is almost world class but something stops us from saying he is world class. Can't nail down what it is.

Look at his goal scoring record particularly for Ireland - that is the record of a class player is it not? 53 goals or something like that. Look at the way he went about scoring yesterday - calm and dependable. It's like in the last year he has obtained a new stature so to speak.

But has he yet reached "world class" status in your opinion? i.e up there with the best?

Love the guy think he's a wonderful footballer. World class i don't know but tbh with his international scoring record with a very average team it's hard to argue against.

It must count for something that you have managed to play for ALL your boyhood clubs? Messi will never achieve that.

His club career is what stops him from being "world class", imo. He's done very well but just hasn't gone a bit further.

I know he's scored dozens of goals in the EPL but he's not even in the top ten goalscorers in the EPL history. Some of the players who've scored more than him: Andy Cole, Fowler, JF Hasselbaink, Sheringham, Ferdinand, Owen. While all would agree they are very good players, you wouldn't put them on the same level as Messi, both Ronaldos, Zidane, Ronaldinho (just some of the players from the same era).

Again, different people will have different interpretations of what world class is so it's hard to pin it down.

Club football is much tougher than international football.

He's pretty decent. A good player by Ireland's standards. Certainly not world class though.

    Class. But not World Class.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,017 ✭✭✭colly10

Messi is world class, Xavi, Ronaldo and Silva are world class.
Robbie Keane is not world class

Robbie Keane is not world class.
He is however a goalscorer, as he has proven wherever he has gone.
I like Robbie and hope he goes on to finish his career on a high with Villa and then in the MLS. Hope he can bang in a few in the Euro's too.

Watching Robbie Keane play for me is he runs around, falls over, puts hands in the air towards the ref like some kicked him up the hole and scores the odd goal.
I always said I think hes one of the best players to have when youre a goal up but so frustrating to watch when youre a goal down or drawing.....
...but (and I hate to say it) his goal scoring record for Ire is very good, he has scored against good teams.
Is he world class? For me world class is making (in my imagination) the starting lineup of 3 of the top 5 teams in the world and he would not do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 503 ✭✭✭Brendan97

1.You can't be world class in the MLS.
2.He has always done well at average teams but when he made the step up he fell back down e.g Inter Milan & Liverpool.
3.He never stood out in the premiership, always decent but never had a run of form where defenders feared him.
4.Didn't fulfill the potential some people thought he had when he was younger and big clubs where interested in him.

    He's not even close!

I know he's scored dozens of goals in the EPL but he's not even in the top ten goalscorers in the EPL history.
Could be in a few weeks though. I think he was about four behind Hasselbaink when he moved to LA Galaxy. If that's right his brace on Saturday means he's only two behind. So he has about five weeks to score three goals and pass out Jimmy Floyd to be tenth on the all time list.

As for him being world class? Nah. He definitely has been world class on occasions but he just hasn't done it consistently enough over the years to be considered world class. Cracking player all the same and an Irish legend.

The move to Inter defined Robbie Keane, he could have been one of the best strikers in Europe but it didn't work out, At Coventry he used to go on mazy dribbles and was so quick, definetly one of the best young players in Europe at the time. He is quality, well not so much anymore but his form before he went to Liverpool he was excellent for Spurs, that with his International Career mean I'd put Keane in the third tier of players(players like hulk would be there), top is like ronaldo, messi, second is like ibrahimovic, so hes quality, but never was world class, but showed potential that he could have been. He didn't do anything in Champions League which would have put him into the second tier of players.

Has scored some world class goals over the years, but not in the 'World class' bracket as a footballer as i believe this should be a very small club for the Messi's and such of this world. Always will be a legend though for Ireland and at WHL.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,314 ✭✭✭BOHtox

He's an absolutely fantastic player. One of the best strikers on the international scene ever, not just for Ireland either. He's a proven goalscorer and a great captain. He's probably not world class but my god, he's some player. Not Messi-esque but at what he does (score goals) he's brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Anybody remember a cracker of a goal he scored for Spurs six or seven years ago? He was on the byline on the right hand side of the pitch and he skillfully lifted the ball over a defenders head and then done the exact same to the second defender before stroking the ball home. No idea who it was against and I can't find it on YouTube. description may not be 100% accurate either but it was along those lines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,435 ✭✭✭wandatowell

ffs, he's good. Better than a lot of EPL players but NO WHERE NEAR WORLD CLASS STANDARD.

    Not even close.

World class, no. But he's one of the best players we've ever had. The amount of stick he gets is ridiculous imo, and he doesn't deserve it. He's consistantly played well for Ireland, and has scored a huge amount of goals for us, winning some massive games for the country.

Nope. World Class would include a the top 22 players in the world for me, first and second best in the world in their various positions. Robbie unfortunately doesn't make it close in my opinion. Good player though, and the best finisher that Ireland has ever had.

  • Site Banned Posts: 1,856 ✭✭✭paddy kerins

He may not have been world class but some of the goals he got were. One that sticks out is one against Wigan for Spurs. Let the ball drop in front of him from a clearance and lobbed the keeper from about 25 yards. Think it was 07/08 season

Love Robbie, but no he is not world class.

Yes that was some goal, it was against Blackburn at the lane. That goal itself was world class definately, unbelievable :)

Found it at last. Lovely goal. It's around 4.44 seconds into this video.

This stunner against Chelsea to make it 4-4 also sticks out in the memory.

Henrik Larsson was the last world class player at Celtic.Robbie Keane was with us for a short spell, but world class-no.Roy Keane was also with us for a short spell.World class-Maybe.

This questions a bit obvious, I wonder about someone like Alan Shearer who really didn't do anything big in European or International football, people would call him a world class striker all his exploits were in his domestic league. He's prob like a Totti or someone.

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,238 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

Not World Class, but still a great player, especially for Ireland.

We will miss him when he's gone from the national team, that's a certainty.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

This Alan Shearer?Englands hero. He was a dirty bass.He wasnt sent off for nearly decapitating Lennons head by the way.The most overprotected player ever in the EPL was Shearer. He was nasty.

He's not world class, not a chance.

He's decent though, but frustrating to watch.

A good goal against Wolves doesn't make you world class.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭EdenHazard

He's far better than decent, and I don't know if your a Spurs fan but if thats as an Ireland 'fan' then your judging him being frustating in a teams style that doesn't suit him and hasn't for about 5 years yet he still scores goals. Quality.

People pointing at goals saying 'that was world class' the man is unreally talanted he's obviously gonna score great goals.

No definitely not - however if he scores against Spain in the summer then yes he is world class. He blows hot and cold - some games he plays he is absolute rubbish, others he is class, you never know which Robbie you're going to get.

Paul McGrath was the best Irish player I ever saw. Consistently class in every game and definitely worth his place on any team in the world.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭EdenHazard

WHAAAAAT? Keane is prob one of the most consistent players going. 8 goals for a defensive side in qualification, what a return.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,059 ✭✭✭Sindri

He's not world class though, and he butchers so many chances for Ireland.

How are you rating Larsson world class and only having Roy Keane as a maybe?

Larsson is great, a real legend, but Keane had a better career IMO and was a better player overall.

Larsson won the CL with Barca.Id say overall Larsson was better than Roy, but Roy was collosal.

Hang on, what are we using to measure the success of someone's career here? Roy Keane won more honors playing at a much higher level of football than Larsson.

Both fantastic players, and it's a shame that most of Larsson's career was spent at Celtic.

Typical EPL arrogance.Henrik Larsson played at Celtic when they reached a European Final. He played for the team that he grew to love. The supporters of Celtic are amongst the most passionate and appreciative in the world. He knew he was appreciated at Celtic.Thats why Henrik is an absolute Celt to the bone to this day.He played with Barca and won a CL.(Arsenal fans will hate him for his brilliant performance in the final). But Henrik appreciates TRUE passionate supporters.Thats why hes a Celtic fan. Till death.

World Class? Realistically no he never was. But he's been damn good for a long time now. He's a magic player to watch live. I saw him a few times in 2008 live and took to focusing on his movement for most of the game. Supremely intelligent, and works so hard off the ball to provide an option and make space for others. That gets lost on camera.
