Learning a new art...

    Hi Guys

I have been reading this form and also doing other research into learning a martial art. I have to say first I'm not looking to end up cage fighting or anything like that just to get fit and be able to defend myself and have fun. I would be more interested in joint locks and some throw etc. instead of kicking and punching if you know what I mean.
I was thinking about Aikido or just jiu jitsu. There is a place on Macken street, http://www.aikido.ie/aikidostart.htm that I'm hoping to go to this week and have a look at what they do and talk to the instructors.
I'm having trouble finding anywhere that teaches JJ as everywhere seems to do Bjj. Can you recommend any where or I'm open to any suggestions.

Has anyone trained at the place on Macken street before and if so what is it like?

I'm based in North Dublin city by the way

There's a jujutsu class in Coolmine.

If you're interested in joint locks and some throws instead of kicking and punching, it might actually be worth your while to check out a BJJ class as it's probably closest to what you've described.

    www.bujinkan.ie

Bujinkan, although called "budo taijutsu" contains the same elements as any of the classic jujutsu schools of Japan (which includes kicking/punching btw)

    - locks, throws, restraints, take-downs
    - weapons

I'd recommend the Glasnevin dojo if your sticking to Northside Dublin but the Harolds X one is my own teacher and is running a beginners course soon

Check out the following http://www.aikikaiireland.ie/. The Heron and / or Phoenix Dojo may be the nearest to your location.

Aikido definitely sounds like the martial art that you are looking to learn and is effective, disciplined and fun.

Might be worth giving Judo a try, lots of throws, joint locks and chokes. Plenty of good schools around aswell.

Henshin Aikido dojo is between Santry and Coolock. Our beginners course is on Mondays 8pm, its a 4 week course and costs 50 euro... there's no start date, you can start whenever you want and do your 4 weeks.

Come and have a look, our regular Aikido classes are Monday & Wednesday 7-8pm and 9-10pm, Friday 7-8am and Saturday 10.30-11.45am... we're here 6 days a week, so you can have a chat with the instructors.

We also have Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at the studios if you want to have a look at a class.
