Rusty Chain

    Hey,

I use a fenwick foam degreaser to clean my chain, cassette etc and TF2 lubricant but my chain is rusting up. I'm assuming these two items are not causing the rust? The bike is stored in an underground carpark in work and in my bedroom at home so the only exposure to rain is on the route to/from work and any other spins out.

Also what can I use to clean the rust off the chain without taking it off the bike?

    DOC

Something like this is useful for on the bike cleaning:

    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=8207

Or you can buy a nickel/zinc plated chain.

The lubricant your using , is it a dry type lubricant or a wet type .

As you could use as much of the dry type one as you want in the winter and it wont help in this country , whereas the wet as long as the bike is reasonable maintained in winter the wet should keep it rust free .

Do you dry the chain with a rag after a wet cycle , this is what i do and have had no rust issues all winter.

What chain is on your bike? and what'd you pay for it?
    How old is it?
    What distance have you done?
Do you wipe the parts down when wet or leave it inside still wet?

If it's a cheap chain it might have crap quality metal that rusts easily?

TBH I don't do this, its just left in my room. Its pretty much beside the heater which is only on for an hour during the evening.

I bought the bike second hand and I've been doing about 100k commute every week on it since the summer along with a good few spins out.

Wipe with a dry cloth then with an oily cloth along with tiny drop of oil

If you've noticed it in the last few weeks I would think it's down to the road salt/grit that was spread during the last cold snap, it kills chains!
