Ford Focus 1.6TdCi Issues

    Hi all

I am wondering would any Ford / Peugeot mechanic know if there are ECU upgrades for this engine? I have a constant problem getting any decent fuel economy from it. Driving like a granny returns me just 41mpg, mix of M50 and suburban driving at 65mph or below.

I have tried all of the quick fixes (full service, change filling station, a/c always off).

The only other issue I have is sometimes a slight acceleration hesitation, which I think might be due to it being an electronic throttle mechanism. This would hardly worsen fuel economy though

    Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I have the exact same problem in an 06 1.6tdci! Replaced the egr valve, throttle position sensor and topped up the fuel additive! Any help would be appreciated!

On the Ford there are a number of PCM upgrades available, but to the best of my knowledge, none of these are for economy. Best get someone to do a code scan and see if there are any codes logged, and take it from there.

I'd be getting a diagnostic check done, failing that you would have to test the injectiors.

I presume the air filter is clean?

I would also have suggested checking that the timing belt is not one tooth out of position but then Shamrock says he has exactly the same problem and it seems unlikely that two engines would have exactly the same timing fault.

You would definitely know if the timing belt was a tooth out. It more likely to be the Lambda sensor

Perhaps its a clogged DPF on the way out? There are no faults showing up on diagnostics, bringing it into my local ford dealer in the next few days to see if they can force a static re-generation with their diagnostics, will let ye know what the result is!

    @DanWall,These engines don't have Lambda sensor's.

As said above an engine download may help and after that injectors
    may need to be checked.
Going back to basics are the brakes binding, low tyre pressure etc...?

A blocked dpf would usually flag a fault in the engine ecu and cause the car to go into limp mode.
What diagnostic equipment was used to read the fault codes..?
Most good diagnostics should be able to read dpf differintial pressure across the dpf.

just out of curiousity are you using the fuel trip to give you your average milege or are you filling the tank to the neck and doin your calculations from distance/litres?

    ford jedi

I had half a tank on thursday, the trip computer said it would do 244 miles, I got 140 miles before the fuel light came on with 50 miles left in the tank...

Just serviced it yesterday (air, oil, fuel filters and oil) and still no difference in fuel consumption, Its booked into Ford this week so will let ye all know the outcome, thanks again for the replys!

there are alot of software up grades for these cars , the average fuel info on the dash is never accurate, firstly have the wheels /tyres been changed on your car at all? wheel changes and different profile tyres need to be racllaibrated to your cars pcm inorder to give accurate readings .

alot of focus have larger alloys on them that arent original and need to be reprogammed for same , also dont mind what the distance left sayes ,what exactly are you getting for a full tank ?and for how many litres

I have a 2005 c4 1.6 Hdi (same engine I think) and with very careful round town driving,I have averaged 40.98 mpg over the last 6 months.
My tank holds 60 litres and I get about 880 km out of it.

Right, had the car in ford today! DPF is ok, I do alotof long distance driving and this would lenghten the life span of it from the average 75k. No faults are showing on ford diagnostics, the mechanic was puzzled but very helpful and informitave,he let me stay by his side for the full 2 and a half hours he was working on it and went through every step of what he was doing in detail! The chugging was happening between 1500-2000 rpm in all gears but when feathering the throttle, it also idles slightly rough at times ( completely random times). I did enquire about a PCM upgrade but the mechanic was very reluctant to do it until it becomes a last resort. He enquired as to when it was last serviced and I told him I did it last week. He then mentioned injectors, instead of wasting my time and money he said to try a bottle of injector cleaner (fortee was the name of the stuff) and see if there is a difference. I bought the bottle (400ml for 15 euro) there, filled her up and added in the fortee correctly. I drove home from the garage, 35 miles, with the chugging still there. I wanted to see would this stuff help because the car is booked in for NCT tomorrow lunchtime, so I drove from Glanmire Cork to Cahir in Tipp out the motorway this evening (75 miles return) and it has made a huge difference. The chugging has nearly dissapeared in comparison to before and it feels as if the car has gained about 20bhp, especially on 2nd and 3rd gear hills. I'm going to take it for a good run again in the morning to get as much of the cleaner through the injectors before the NCT.

Thanks again for all the replys and I hope this helps someone else in the same boat!

I will of course let ye know if it passes or not, finger crossed!

    Oiche Mhaith!
