lexus is 220 d losing power

I've the 07 car in the title.over the past few months it's losing power.
best way to describe it is like going from 2nd gear into 5th- where it feels like it could cut out or just take a while to get up to speed. driving off on a hill start is a killer-i've to rev it loads before leaving off the handbrake.
i'd a local guy run diagnostics on it and it's fine. he also changed oil filter and oil using the fullysynthetic stuff. i also got that stuff you fire into the tank to clear out any carbon.
my dilemna is that i bought off tom hogan lexus in limerick whove gone wallop. nearest main dealer is cork or kildare which is a right spin.i dont expect anyone to know whats up but was wondering if i'd be wasting my time taking it to a local toyota main dealer(given that it's basically an expensive toyota)? it'd be a lot easier but i dont wanna waste more money on them if i'd still have to take it to the lexus dealer in cork-kearys.
i'vea bit of previous experience with kearys and they're right bloody expensive.
advise or a diagnosis would be appreciated

If it had a Lexus warranty, that would be honoured at any dealer. They have problems with soot build up in the egr, could also be injector hassles or dpf gone feckways.

Best to let a dealer have a looksee

I doubt a Toyota dealer would have the diagnostics for the IS, but it may be so obvious that they wouldn't need it.

it's 07 so it's well over the 3 year warranty:(

    You bought it new?

bought in sep 07 off dealer. it was in a tiny crash affecting the front wing and only had 2k km on clock so owner traded it in. god knows what goes on in fellas heads. mind you if i waited 4 months i'd have had a new one for same price due to budget changes!
its got 107k km on it now

I'd chance a Toyota dealer in that case. Problems of is220s losing power are common

yeah, by all accounts the premium brand main dealers are well able to load on the cost. the thing's probably only worth about 12k judging off carzone.the money situation has changed a bit since i splashed out 5 years ago:mad:. i was told by the guy doiung the diagnostics that it was aproblem with those cars. he reckons that the dealer may do a discount due to that but i wouldn't be too optimistic. i dont see why they should either given that the warranty is up

Did you (or anyone else) drive it when it was really low on fuel recently and ignore the 'fuel low' warning light? If so I reckon it could be the fuel pump - I had the exact same issue with a Merc, the fuel pump was running 'dry'.

i'd usually wait til the light comes on before i'd fill up. could have happened allright though!

Could it be the head gasket on the way out? It is a common fault with those engines. Also the engine is the same as an Avensis (admittedly the 2.2 D-4D 177 wasn't available on Irish market cars, but the 2.2 D-4D 150 was, I presume the 177 is just a remapped version of the 150), so whatever about the rest of the car, I can't imagine why a Toyota dealer wouldn't have any problems with diagnostics for the engine anyway.

.... doesn't sound at all like HG failure.

a few years back when it was under warranty there was an issue where i couldn't get out of 3rd gear. dont know the proper name but basically there was some dirt stopping fuel going into engine.

this time it's different. you can drive along in 5th gear getting up to 120kph but it's just real sluggish getting there. as i've already said hill start is a non runner without having it well revved up prior to leaving off the handbrake. as i'm driving on in any gear it takes a while before it revs up fully and changing up a gear feels as if i've skipped 1 or 2 due to it being so sluggish.

There is a Lexus dealer (Burke's) in Ballybrit (next to the race course), Galway which is only just over a hour from Limerick these days if you are really stuck.

I had a 07' IS220d Sport. Similar problem started occuring, after a short length of time the 'K' light came on and the engine defaulted to safety mode. Lexus Ireland collected the car and discovered a problem with the 5th injector ( a common problem with the D4d engine). They covered it under warranty. Also EGR valve was repalced under a recall.

5th injector is one cause, it should have been replaced by now really though, most were recalled, some were just changed if the car showed any signs of the symptoms. Next most likely candidate would be the EGR valve, also an item commonly covered by them even out of warranty. Toyota dealer should be able to deal with those. Lexus Ireland are good though for out of warranty issues if your service history is with Lexus/Toyota.

Kearys have great service and I didn't find them overly expensive, got a minor service and the software update on mine. Even brought some of my own parts. Free taxi in and out of cork while the serviced it. Follow up calls to see how it was going afterwards as well. I was really impressed with them and I didn't by mine there. It's nearly worth going down to them limerick is not that far from cork.

MPG is still terrible though, 30 -35 at best. What's your like?

Hi i have a 07 lexus is220d,that has been releasing a lot of white smoke out exhaust for past few months, mostly when i am in traffic or driving off,i though a service would sort it,very bad yesterday had to actually pull over cloud of white smoke.anybody have same problem?could cause be dirty diesel?grateful if someone having similar problems could get bk to me please:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,541 ✭✭✭Leonard Hofstadter

White smoke is indicitive of coolant getting mixed with fuel, suggesting that the head gasket is on its way out unfortunately!

Thank you for getting bk go hope lexus ireland will cover cost, expensive job i would think :(

Considering that you've got a car that is two years out of warranty, I wouldn't be getting my hopes up! If it's got a full Lexus dealer history (done at the correct times I might add), then you've some hope of a goodwill gesture. It's certainly not that uncommon for those engines to suffer from HG failure anyway!
