Champions League vs World cup

Which is better? Harder to win?

IMO it's the world cup, once you get to the quarters, the tension for the players must be so much, unlike the CL, theres no second chances, Barca could have a horrible first leg in the champions league, but have another chance in the second leg, which kinda makes it an anti-climax. The World Cup is also more presitgous so imo its the better tournament, and no kid really dreams of winning the champions league like they would the world cup.

And the WCs only every 4 years so depending on what age a player breaks through they might only get 2 goes at it!

    World Cup.

You can turn around a bad result in the 1st leg of the CL, but in the knockout stages of the WC, it means you're out.

The Champions League has a better standard of teams, but the world cup is a far better tournoment, there is a magic to the world cup that that will never be emulated by the champions league or any other sporting competition.

World Cup for me. I'd say if you asked 100,000 footballers which they would rather win 99% would say the World Cup. Unless your Stephen Ireland of course.:pac:

World Cup particular for European teams which have to qualify from tough groups.

If you win the world cup, your obituary will almost certainly read “World Cup winner X dies” the same Champions League doesn’t have the same mystique, now while some of this may be due to nostalgia I know I get more excited about a world cup than any other competition even though I usually don’t have a team involved in it.

Yeah the depth in Euro international football is very high at the moment. You have teams like Ireland, Sweden, Greece, Norway who very hard to beat, then you have the likes of Belgium, Turkey who don't even qualify but have very good starting 11's. I honestly think the Champions League is vastly overrated by people who read the roy keane autobiography a few times. He talked about the CL, of a time when European football was far more even than it is today, when it was just the champions who competed, not the team who finished 4th 20 points behind league winners.

the World Cup is more prestigious still, but the Champions League is played at a higher standard once the rubbish is knocked out (just like all tournaments, really).

    Mourinho:
This game (Champions League) is the most important in the world," Mourinho said on Tuesday. "It is even bigger than the World Cup because the teams in it are at a higher level than national teams, who can't buy the best players.

Remembering back to when I was a kid, the World Cup was fantastic, and it seems like a stupid question to even consider. But as an adult, the World Cup is as boring as hell for the most part. Absolutely terrible to watch at times.

If you picked out all the best bits and made a compilation, sure, it'd be great. But even the two worst teams in the CL playing each other is more fun than watching Switzerland play Honduras.

Each World Cup of the last 3 or 4 has produced less than 5 top quality games, whereas the Champions League regularly provides a more frequent spattering of quality - and just because it's on more regularly. The good game:bad game ratio is better in the CL.

Now, of course, this all changes when Ireland are in the WC. You can't beat that excitement. But in unbiased, strictly footballing terms, the CL is much better.

    Mourinho:
Agree with this. The World Cup always has been, and probably always will be more prestigious than the Champions League, but the Champions League is a higher standard of football. Almost every great player of the past 30 years has played in the CL on a regular basis, whereas there have been some notable absentees from the WC. And right now, arguably the greatest team of all time with arguably the best player of all time have brought the CL to an even higher standard.

I disagree with Mourinho because once you get to where it matters, let's say quarter finals, the quality would be there or there abouts the same. Not even Barca have the best player in the world in each position, mayb among them, but the best national sides would be the same.

World Cup is more prestigious. Id say the Euro's are higher still because its so hard to qualify for (at least till 2016). The thing about the Champions league is that its every year so there is always next year if you get knocked out. Ive always wondered what a club world cup every four years in a host country would be like, amazing I would imagine. I know there is a club world cup now but its shoite!

Which is better? Champions League, but both are becoming less and less attractive to watch. As is football in general.

Which has the most prestige? World Cup

Agree, football is getting boring to watch so much in last few years, slowly I stopped watching analysis now slowly stopping watching football matches unless theres a player I wanna watch, like I try watch every Lille match to see EH!

World Cup. For the elite players in the elite select clubs, it's probably harder to win.

The likes of Meelan, Madrid, Barcelona, Munich, Juventus, Man Yoo, Liverpool are usually there or thereabouts in the Champions League. Sooner or later they'll win. All those sides (bar Juventus who reached the final) have won it in the last eleven years and several in multiple finals. You can be a CL winner and best player in the world, with no World Cup. Shevchenko and Messi come to mind..

For the weaker sides, the World Cup is probably easier to win, outside the elite clubs in Europe. You can be a World Cup winner but play for Athletic or Valencia or Villarreal or Chelsea or Arsenal. The second tier of European sides have much less chance of budging on the CL silverware.

I've always like that comp. even when it was just the european champs Vs the south american one(which it more a less still is). It's the continental champions never understood why it wasn't shown on tv until this year, i know it not seen as major trophy but it can be seen as deciding who's the best cup team in the world

the one every 4 years would end up being dominated by european teams in the same way the world cup does be

The world cup is harder to win because of the straight KO format, the 2 legged format in the CL benefits the stronger sides(bigger clubs) more that's one reason that all the club sides listed above have always been doing well in the CL
