I love fan-made posters- there's usually some effort involved. So many official posters these days are just lazy...

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS6WcqFzi3c-__33Yf7Zi-OQzD6NEUjsb1xbspyNjmQ3m2iNZU5EA

    :( Photoshop+Laziness.

Seriously someone got paid to do that! Compare it to this one done for a fan contest by Bryan Lenning

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTtzixFR270Gb71J2tKwygUg9JydMqWwxtoAs1rL9lLkCBGt_8X

    Way better! :) Effort+Creativity

One of my favourite recent ones is this poster by James White for Drive

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS0OWGWHOuwN82K4BXNki-8-UivZTUjMOQ6cz6giAalPCJYNrzZ

    So great!

Indeed, the lack of creativity in moden movie posters is saddening, its all photoshop floating heads, there's still some cool posters but the majority arent very memorable

I'd say that arguably in the grand scheme of things, the film poster must rank very low in studios' priorities in their marketing campaigns, which might account for their generally poor quality these days.

Time was a film poster was the first (and only?) indication of a new movie on the horizon for cinema-goers. So I guess it stood to reason they be works of art in their own right; something to catch the eye & imagination of the public. Now, in the era of the internet & saturation media coverage, the film poster is a total anachronism, unfortunately.

lazyness in modern posters, exhibit A:

now some of those posters are quite nice, but all very, very similar.

Where does copyright lie with these posters? Can the artists make money using (what is presumably) a trademarked image? Is that why they all seem to be limited runs?

The Kill Bill poster really brings out the essence of the film, if that makes any sense. The Rocky poster is conceptually brilliant and poetic, really hard to come up with visuals like that.

The Rocky poster is excellent the rest for the most part look like fanboy stuff rather than a piece of media that would sell a film to the general public.

I think that guy used to post his photoshop posters on the bloody-disgusting forum boards, the obsession with Scream is all present and correct. Have to say that I don't find his work in the least bit interesting or impressive, it's generic photoshopping with no real sense of style. If you look through deviantart you'll find some great old fashioned style hand drawn posters like the Alamo Drafthouse ones posted here.

Sadly this sort of thread could soon be a big no no on here if the upcoming Irish copyright law that EMI and Sean Sherlock are pushing through.

Don't have to be a fan to appreciate a poster that is so simple yet effective. Sure there's more meaning to it if you followed the series but it's far more artistic than 90% of modern posters. Put it this way that poster could hang in a gallery as a work of art, doubt there's a single poster in multiplexs right now that could hang alongside it.

Maybe a gallery for average movie posters but that's about it.

In fairness, I'd say 50% of the power of the poster lies in whether you 'get it' or not (and the reason I doubt it's officialness is that it doesn't really gel with either the domestic or international marketing). But I do think it's a beautifully simple but powerful image. But like most posters, I much prefer the ones that are actually related to the theme. Like the Social Network:

    Social_network_film_poster.jpg

    Or Somewhere...

    somewhere.jpg

I think the Olly Murrs style ones are often very, very nice (some better than others - the Moon one gets it fairly bang on particularly) but I also think it has created a 'style' of fan-made posters that has made them all look kinda the same and generic. There's an art to being able to sum up the tone and feeling of the film in a poster. And a lot of the fanart ones just settle on pop art or formulaic 'blockbuster' stylings instead. IMO ;)

Now this is a striking and beautiful fan poster:

Much better at summing up the atmosphere than the official job!

We are, it's been talked about fit the past few months and Sean Sherlock is fast tracking it as we type. It's just another example of big business dictating law making policy to the government and I'd recommend that people start emailing the people involved to air their grievances. This policy could mean that sites such as Flickr could be inaccessible in Ireland or that EMI could have a blog that gives a negative review to one of their acts simply because the author used a copyrighted image of the band or album cover above the review.

Somewhat off topic, but potentially yes.

Holy crap; cheers for that. I won't derail the thread with any more talk, but I'm shocked something like this could get its way into Irish law whilst we got all hot & bothered about the US doing something similiar

Now back to our regular scheduled programme; I've been hunting for those prints online, there's not really anything that comes close to Olly Moss' material :-/

There's some truth in that but I'll take formulaic fan-art over formulaic commercial posters any day of the week. Colourful illustrations will always beat photoshopped floating heads in my book. And there's lots of non-Olly Moss/Saul Bass-ripoff fan posters out there too.

That's not to say that all official posters are bad but I think a lot of them are just lazy. I know a poster that is trying to sell a film is going to look different than one done by a fan but that doesn't excuse their general blandness. Just from last year, I thought Jane Eyre, Bridesmaids, Melancholia, Black Swan (to name a few off the top of my head) had creative, interesting posters that still managed to show the actors and give an idea of the film. Sadly these seem to be the exception rather than the rule.

i suppose some of these poster would be considered art, most of them wouldnt be cheap,

id say getting them made up yourself would be better, anyone know if most places that do photos would do them for ya on larger sheets,
