As above, any opinions. I'll mainly be shooting fallow, but I will have a few chances for reds. Anyone using anything in particular?

Norma 120 grain is what I used on deer and foxes back in the day, very expensive though

Cheers tack,I might be able to get a west german made s&b 6x42 factory re-conditioned for €300. Do you think it's a good deal? I missed out on one last year, exact same,as I didn't have a use for it at the time.

any of the 6.5 rounds available will drop a deer, just aim it in spot you intended it to go

when i had a 6.5x55 i found the 120g norme BT's worked best. i shot all 3 species with them at various ranges, not one of them complained.

although S&B are a great scope and you will have no problem with that 6x42, you could get a better scope, i think you would be limiting your self with only 6 power.

that is very true, but he asked what people have used and which worked best for them.
have you anything to add, or any experience with 6.5 that might help

ive already added it,just in simpler english just for you so you do get too confused paulo,
to the op, dont get too hung up on what 6.5 rounds to use, paying an extra 5-10 euro a box on a box of someone elses "favourite brand" that they use isnt gonna make a deer anymore dead,
whats available on the shelf today will all kill a deer and if you know in yourself that you are more than capable of killing with a clean shot no matter what brand is in the chamber,
    then suit your pocket

my mate uses federal fusion think there 120 grain

I have used Federal Fusion, Winchester, Lapua, Remington and Hornady , I have no complaints about any of the makes on there ability to knock a deer. I hunt only Fallow so i cant vouch for their effects on other species.

Any make will do the job and have some to spare so its just a case of suiting your pocket .

Also i have a S&B 8x56 which i find is plenty good for any shot i have so far encountered. I think they range between 550 and 650 eoro .

Hope this helps some bit .

Ive used 140gr federal fusion, 140gr federal powershok, 120gr norma bt, 140gr hornadys and a couple other types and all of these have worked well in my 6.5 sako 75. The best out of all the different bullet types i have used is the normas 120gr. My advice to you is go and try as many different makes and weights as you can and see which suits your rifle better......

Hello Longranger, I have found 140 gr soft points to be the best as they cause the least meat damage.

Big,heavy bullets travelling at moderate speeds will put deer on the ground with minimal meat damage. Lapua Mega 155gr or Norma Oryx or Vulkan 156gr.

Great scope, used one for many years, reliable, fantastic in low light and all the magnification you need for deer sized game out to sensible shooting ranges and beyond.
