Pros and Cons of rooting & custom ROM

I've been very happy with my HTC Desire for the past year or so, but I've reached a frustration with the limited number of apps I can install on it, even with app2sd.

It seems like the main reasons not to root it would be that it would void the warranty and risk bricking the phone. I'm fine with those risks, but want to ask about other things to be aware of.

I'm thinking of following this guide : http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_(GSM):_Full_Update_Guide

    - Are there any/many apps that won't work with a custom rooted phone. Some of the main ones I'd use would be Skifta, Tweetdeck, Viber, Skype - any way to find out in advance if the won't be in the market after I root?

    - This post gives a few tricks for replacing some the HTC Sense features in CM, the main one that caught my eye was the fact that there's no predictive dialer in android and that TouchPal Dialer might be a good replacement. Are there other things I would be relying on in HTC Sense that needs an app to replace in CM?

Anything else important to know about before rooting? thx

I have a HTC Desire that I got from O2 and used a Gold Card so that I could install a non O2 firmware. Could I use the steps in the link above to install Cyanogenmod or is there something else that I need to do because of the Gold Card?

Gold card is only used to root the Desire, you don't need to flash ROMs that way, once you're rooted you just install ROM Manager and then flash Clockword Mod through that, through there you can flash Custom ROMs, and download CyanogenMod via ROM Manager.

There are no apps that I know of that won't work on a rooted phone. On the other hand, there are many apps that only work on a rooted phone.

Don't go for CyanogenMod if you want to stick with HTC Sense. Get Runnymede's HTC Desire ROM from xda-developers.com instead.

Not sure if that is correct Dave147. As far as I know my phone is not rooted. I think the Gold Card just fools the phone into thinking it is unbranded and allows me to install non O2 firmware and get updates directly from HTC. Whenever there are updates I have to put the Gold Card back into the phone before I apply them. So if I was to try the CyanogenMod steps should I put the Gold Card in or not, would it make any difference?

    Cheers for the advice.

Working through the steps on this page
    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788044

    and this
    http://theunlockr.com/2010/09/21/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-htc-desire-2/

Will see how it goes. First step was fine, hit a minor snag when the current version of Unrevoked wasn't able to root my Desire, but I found an earlier version that could.

Onward and upwards! Might try CM7 first, since it has such wide support and see how I get on with it.
