How to Identify businesses that are hiring

I am returning to Ireland from San Francisco in a couple of days and will have to go on the job hunt as soon as I can. I am trying to come up with a system to identify businesses that may be in a position to hire me beyond those few advertised jobs that will be inundated with applicants.

    I want to identify:
    • Businesses that are undergoing expansion
    • Have recently gotten a new big contract
    • Are establishing a new office
    • Have had a strong level of growth in share value or profits

I think these are the criteria for a business to be looking for someone to hire, any other criteria or corrections are welcome.

My main question though is what are the best resources that I can consult to check the above criteria, are there websites that track Irish businesses performance, report on successes or new contracts or show share values and financial growth? I have not done this before and as I left due to limited employment options, I want to return with a smart system to find work.

I had been employed in the Architecture industry but at this stage, I want to put my skills to the test in another industry. What do you guys think?

Am I asking this in the right section of the forum or is there a jobseekers area?

I read of a fantastic new initiative on the Sunday newspaper which asks the employers of Ireland to pledge a job on a new website called www.hireland.ie It was hoped that if each employer in Ireland pledged one new job, that would be 10s of 1000s of possible jobs. I checked their website now and there are loads of well known employers pledging multiple jobs. Have a browse around to see if anything tickles your fancy. Best of luck!

Looks pretty good, I will be trying for some of the jobs listed. My original motivation for starting this thread though was to find methods of identifying potential employers by their companies performance before they would advertise a job, and thereby hopefully giving myself an advantage.

There is no tracker such as the one you are looking for. You would probably be most successful if you followed a particular sector or two, pharma and software for instance are still flying and are permanently recruiting.

Do you mind me asking how you keep up to date with trends like that? I am literally just back in the country a few days now and still getting over the jet-lag, I just want to get a jump on the job hunt asap. The fact that I am trying to do a switch in career's is probably going to work against me as far as degree and experience goes.

It's simple, buy the Irish times everyday and read it cover to cover.

IMHO, the business pages of the paper advice is right. Also network like mad with anyone you know who has business connections. (Though it's Irealnd, don't believe all the rumours you hear).

And I hesitate to say this, because some will find it distasteful - but nevertheless I've been told it has potential:

    - Watch the death notices for people less than retirement age.
    - Google such people (RIP), and find out their role and current employer on Linked-in

Slightly less distasteful - look in the media etc for people who've just started new jobs, and find out where they were working before.
