Where to sell jewellery online?

Hi guys :D I started making jewellery a while back and now that I've got a growing collection, I'd like to start selling it online. I'm not expecting people to be beating my door down to make me a millionaire but I would like to just test the waters and see if I can get shut of some of my bits and bobs :)

Thing is, I'm not sure if I'd be better off selling on eBay or setting up my own website. Also, all the pieces I make are sterling silver (components, chain etc) which is fairly expensive to use in comparison to 'antique' silver and gold. I'm a die hard believer that jewellery should be made from high quality durable material so I'm not keen to use the cheaper imitation alloys. If I were making jewellery to sell, would it be more sensible and cost effective to use the less expensive materials?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :D
