Do you have facebook friends that you don't actually know?

Was reading another thread and someone said to add random people as friends.
As I know all of my facebook friends personally that would never occur to me but apparently it's something that can be done.

    Hence this poll.
To qualify as friend it has to be someone you've meet in real life (IRL).

I have met every single facebook friend IRL, at least once. 4 votes

Interesting way to try and define 'friend'. I'm not disagreeing with it, I just know that there are numerous friends I have on FB (and have met numerous times IRL) that I wouldn't be as 'friendly' with as some I've never met (e.g. clients I've only dealt with remotely, contacts made through twitter, etc.).

Like you, the idea of adding 'random' people is bizarre to me. FB contains a lot of personal information, even just in terms of interacting with family members and friends about significant life events, so the idea of opening it up to people I don't know well would never be something I'd consider. There are better ways to interact with 'non friends' (twitter, fora such as boards, etc. etc.) for anyone with this view, so there are still plenty of options out there.

I have friends on there that I became penpals with over 10 years ago. I've never met them, but i consider them very much my friends.

I also use facebook as a way to connect with other students/ researchers in my field, etc. Obviously though I have specific settings for the different types of people on my FB. While facebook uses the word "friend", I think of them all more as "connections".

Same here, I have a couple of American women on Facebook who I've never met but have known for about 9 years.

I have a few boardsies as friends but they're people I actually consider friends despite having not met some of them.
