Breastfeeding wife has faith in humanity restored & trolls hater

Last week my wife had to take a short domestic flight in Europe with our 4 month old baby.

There is only one carrier that flies the route, and unfortunately its a budget airline that only flies cattle class, with no assigned seat numbers.

The departure lounge was heaving; the flight would be full, and the usual jostling for position in the boarding queue had started long before the flight was due to be called.

My wife found a seat in the departure lounge and started discreetly breastfeeding the little one, as always covering her modesty with baby's blanket.

One well dressed "gentleman" took an almighty objection to her doing this and told her she was disgusting, and that if she needed to breastfeed she should either do it in the toilets, or she should not be out in public in the first place.

This, obviously, enraged my wife, and loud words were exchanged between the two, leaving her quite upset. At the height of the argument, almost all the departure lounge were watching.

Eventually, those who had bought "speedy", priority boarding, were called forward, and the man made his way to the aeroplane, throwing my wife a huge sneer as he did so.

When "everyone else" was called forward, my wife and child were towards the end of a queue some 200 or deep.

    Then it happened.

The party in front of her moved aside, and ushered her ahead. Then the people in front of those people did the same. Then the next, until eventually, the whole queue had parted to allow my wife to the very front of the queue!

The plane was virtually empty, with an almost entire choice of seats, with only a few window seats taken by smug looking priority boarding passengers.

And then she saw him, still with a sneer on his face, sat by the window.
So she did what only she could do; she sat down there right beside him and said, "good morning, hope you enjoy the flight".

tl;dr breastfeeding wife has argument with obnoxious hater and then ruins his day

I understand that he was an obnoxious príck but I really don't see the point in her sitting beside him.

I don't get the anger some people get about breastfeeding, or babies crying at an understandable level on the bus etc.

It's almost as though they don't know what babies are or how they work, heaven forbid remember that they were one too.

Fair play to your wife and the passengers.

Man taking offense to tits? I've just lost my faith in humanity.

Unless you're reading the Sun on your lunch?

If a woman is hiding them while feeding the baby, what's the problem with it in public?

    Just asking.

I think I may be one of the only women with a problem with this. If she was well covered up then fine, but otherwise yeah I'd be annoyed too. I don't expect / want to see womens private parts on display when I'm out in public. simple as.

Since the dawn of humanity the human race was breast feed.
Only in the last 5 seconds of our time on this earth have we fed babies from a bottle.
It is a natural, human process and if you do not understand that then you'd want to have a look inward to see why that is.

Personally, I simply don't see what's offensive about it, especially if the mother is being as discreet as possible, as in this case and every other case I've seen.

Of course people are entitled to complain, I just don't see why they would.

Kid needs to eat right? Would you eat in the jax? It's 100% the most natural thing in the world, and what breasts are for. Sorry if you over sexualise them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,518 ✭✭✭matrim

I thought most airlines let people with children board first. Or at least after the priority boarding people.

You don't happen to get sudden flashes of inspiration telling you which women are the "dirty" ones who need to be cleansed, by any chance?

The baby is hungry - why should she pander to people who are uncomfortable with it and many of whom love looking at tits in other contexts? Especially when she's not even getting them out fully. Lots of women do it without showing any tit.

The prob some people have with it is more of a Freudian thing in the mind than the actual sight of it.

Do you object to women going topless on a beach as well?

Breasts exist to feed babies and unfortunately, sometimes those children get hungry in public. There's really nothing to get offended about.

I never said anything about feeding it from a bottle instead

I never said anything about not understanding that it's nature.

whats right about objecting? it is a natural act and nobody is doing it to cause offence. Its not like someone is taking a sh*t in public.

If you are offended by this then i'm sorry but you are a prick that has their head shoved up your arse. Saying oh why didn't she use the loo or somewhere private to do it instead is crazy. Yes lets take all my bags and gear into a small cubicle where i feel like an outcast.

If you have a problem seeing something natural close your eyes all day everyday and STFU

If we all lived like cavemen, and went about with our bits hanging out normally then this wouldn't be a problem, but we don't. we live in a society where flashing your bits is considered wrong. If I went around in a skirt where you could see my genitals then I'd get some horrified looks wouldn't I? even though that's natural as well.

We live in a society where breast feeding in public is perfectly natural. Just some people have issues with it. and have you ever been in a nightclub in Dublin?

    It's all about context.

What do you suggest they do instead?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,059 ✭✭✭Sindri

    I've no problem with it.

    In fact I encourage it.

And the child has to eat like.

And if we both get to see a bit of tit, well then there's nothing wrong with that.

That's exactly my point - it is all about context. in a night club in dublin it may be acceptable to see that, but out in public where people are going about their day, it is an odd sight.

Sex is natural too, that's the act that comes before you have a baby. Why don't we allow shagging in public?

You lost your argument by calling anyone that disagrees with your opinion a "prick" by the way...
