Private tax, commercial insurance?

I know it's usually the other way around, but I want to tax a fiat fiorino van privately and insure it as a commercial as this is the best price I'm getting for insurance. Is this allowed? Will my insurance be null and void because the vehicle is taxed privately?
The insurance policy does allow for s,d&p purposes also.

I've always had a commercial policy as I will be changing from a landcruiser commercial.

    Cheers.

Your insurance covers you for both commercial and social, domestic and pleasure so it is fine. You can't insure a commercial vehicle on a private insurance policy.

You don't have to have any tax on your van to have insurance. Once you fully disclose your details to your insurance company you can tax the van as a bicycle for all they care!

Yes you can. I have it done with Quinn

Are you sure that a commercially insured van covers you for social, domestic and pleasure also?
is this the case with all company's?

A link to the source of your info would be great.

I don't have a link but I have seen it printed on insurance certificates. As far as I know the normal commercial policy covers social, domestic and pleasure use as well. Commercial only policies are also available but aren't as common AFAIK.

Some small car vans can be insured privately but bigger ones have 2be insured commercial.

On our Iveco van on the policy is social domestic and pleasure purposes.

Seems a bit silly, your'e hardly going to say "I took the Iveco out for a Sunday blast down some twisty roads" :pac:

I'm assuming that your policy is a commercial policy? and who are you insured with?

Ok thanks for the help lads,

Just got off the phone with www.insuremyvan.ie, I have set up my policy with them for a premium of €425, this is by far the cheapest quote I received from any insurers.

I'm 26 with a 5 years no claims bonus and the policy is for third party fire and theft.

This policy covers me for commercial, social domestic and pleasure purposes.

    I also received:

    • Step Back Bonus protection
    • European Cover
    • Third Party Cover for trailers
    • Driving of other commercial vehicles
    • windscreen cover

I received the above after a bit of haggling.

I would highly recommend anyone insuring a commercial van to look into this insurer. ;)

P.S. I don't work for this company just extremely happy with the service and premium :D

......... no but you might use it to go to the shop of an evening, go for a game of pitch and putt, drop a friend or relative off somewhere etc etc etc On such occasions it is a legal requirement to have insurance, thus social domestic and pleasure purposes is quite useful.

I have the astra van, which is just an astra estate with no windows or back seats, insured commercially and taxed privately. Insurance was only €490 fully comp with all the extra's including social, domestic and pleasure but they told me that because it is a van, regardless of how its used, it had to have commercial insurance. It also still has to be DOE'd every year.

I wasn't bothered as she checked the quote and there was only about a €30 difference between the astra van and astra estate.

....... Which is where my privately taxed van or some car around the house comes into play. The Iveco is solely a workhorse for towing and carrying heavy/bulky stuff about ;)

But lets assume that most people don't have a van AND a random selection of cars to chose from outside their house..:P

I happen to be in that fortunate situation where I have the choice of multiple vehicles (must look into motor trade insurance) but I know many people where I live with just a van as transport...
