Purchasing a 2005 Toyota Avensis (1.6 petrol) from my sister, what should I pay?

My sister is purchasing a new Toyota Avensis in the next few weeks and I'd like to purchase her 2005 Avensis from her, what would be a fair price to pay for the car?

It has 55,000 km on the clock, it's in excellent condition and has a full service history etc.

i'd say 3.5k and no more, same make and year on donedeal looking for 4-5k but most cars in ireland are overpriced to begin with so factor that in.

with the full service history, unusually low mileage and good condition then 3.5k is a fair price in my books.

    Was the gearbox recall done?

Really, I'm a bit shocked, she had mentioned a figure of €5,500 to me and I was thinking of offering €5,000.

Edit: I just picked up on your comment about low mileage, there is a reason for that, it's a second car which was only used for short trips to school and town etc.

She didn't mention anything about the gearbox. What is the story with the recall? Were all 2005 Avensis recalled??

Never buy/sell cars from/to friends or family. Particularly if you can't agree a price without someone feeling hard done by before the keys change hands. If you like your sister, let her trade it in or help her sell the car to someone you don't know via Adverts or Donedeal and go buy something else from a dealer with a warranty.

The mileage on your sisters car is attractive but look at what other '05 petrol ones are making...

Thanks very much, I agree it never a good idea to mix family and business together but the main reason I want this car is I've a '99 Avensis that needs to be changed, I'm on a tight budget and her car is very very atrractive from a mileage point of view. I was fully prepared to pay €5,000 for it. Thanks for the link too. :)

Why is there such abig price difference on websites ?

5k would be a lot for that.

Tell her to advertise it and if somebody offers her more than what you are willing to pay, let it off. Otherwise, match their price.

She obviously has lined up some other car so she surely knows what the trade in value is. 5.5k is more like what a Toyota dealer might charge with warranty, etc.

Thanks for that, I'm going to print this off and I'll show it to her. I've decided that the maximum I'm going to pay is €4,500. I know that is probably too much but money is tight and I suspect that I might find it difficult to find another car that has low mileage and has been as well looked after as my sisters.

I saw a T25 1.6 in a workshop this week, with the 'box out.
I asked what the issue was and was told that gearbox bearings went in lots of them, Toyota would recall them and fix them.
If you missed the recall it was your own baby.
Sounded plausible to me, seeing as I had both halfshafts replaced on a 90 series LC in 08/09 for free during a recall campaign.
Likewise with the early vvti short blocks.
Maybe they didn't recall them all, or just repaired some?
    Can you enlighten me?

I don't agree. It is IMPOSSIBLE to buy a decent car like an Avensis secondhand from anywhere other than a Toyota dealership . Most have been molested in someway, particularly the ones on donedeal. 5k is still stong money, but if you can agree a price, it is great to get a car that you know has no baggage.

I worked in a main dealer till 09 and this is the first I've heard of it. I know the 5 speed diesel boxes gave bearing trouble but sold stacks of 1.6s over the years and heard nothing about gearbox issues apart from linkages

I remember the recalls on the cruisers alright, saw some right wrecks that hadn't seen a garage in their life getting shiney new parts

the only thing about buying a car (especially if they have owned it from new) from a close family member is you will know the condition of it, how well it was minded, if it was ever crashed or clocked etc. they might be cheaper on donedeal but you are taking a gamble on them. plus you will have to travell to see them and more than likely one or two wont be as described!

if you do buy off your sister you will have to treat it as a private sale eg no comeback if something goes wrong after a short while.. at the end of the day its a car and not worth fighting with your family over.

Again, never buy a car from family or friends. You're bound to end up with trouble.

I don't necessarily agree with that at all. Knowing the full history of a car is worth a fair few Euro. And anyone who is a reasonable person, can agree on a price and know that if anything goes wrong, tough crap. I'd be like that. If I bought of a family member, once it's mine it's mine, if it breaks, my tough crap.
I'd say the fairest thing is to go and see what you're being allowed on a trade in for it, and calculate the straight deal price of the car in question, then you have what she'll really get for it. So for example, go in to a Toyota dealer, pick some newer car there, like an Avensis for 15,000. Ask how much for that car with her 05 one, they might say something like €9,500 with hers. Which sounds like they're giving her 5,500. Then ask how much for that 15k Avensis with no trade in. They may say "We'll let you have it for 14k even with no trade in". Therefore the real value of her car is €4,500. Do that in two or three garages and give her the average of the three values. That's the fairest way. She can't argue and you can't argue.

Forget the fact that it's your sister. A Garage probably offered her 3k for it and that's why she's not trading in against her new car. It's not worth 5k!

Thank you, that seems like really good advice.
