hi all just wondering if there is any truth in the idea that mini dv / digital 8 / and other digital tape formats such as these degrade the picture quality of what is recorded on the tape by the tape being played back a couple of times in the camera?

I'd say it would take more than a few uses to cause damage but it is just a magnetic tape with moving parts that ware and break down so they must have a life span.

You'll be fine. I've miniDVs from the 90s which show no wear whatsoever.

Properly stored magnetic tapes are extremely reliable and will outlast recorded DVDs.
