Climate Control

I feel like a bit of a thick asking this but anyhoo....

Climate control in a car, how does it work. ;)

I think it works by driver selecting a desired temperature, at the moment I'm on a nice 21deg. The car then senses the temperature in the cabin and will activate hot or cold air and activate fans as is required to maintain that temperature.

How am I doing so far?

My issue though is, if I select a low temperature like 17deg the fans go nuts blowing full whack and no matter how long I leave it they never calm down. Same happens if I select a high heat. Do i need to be more patient, is that the problem. Will they eventually calm down and as above only reactivate when they need to? To be honest I've never waited more than a few minutes for the fans to stop cos the noise wrecks my head.

    Thanks

You need to wait.. those little fans can't heat the whole car in 10 seconds :p

If you select a higher temp that the ambient temperature then the car heater will bring the temp up to that level with a bit of patience. However, if you select a lower temp it won't bring the temp down significantly unless you also have the air con on. In mine at least if you select a lower temp the fan blow like hell but they are blowing warm air so it won't reduce the temp ... unless you also have the air con switched on

Yep, need to wait. There are a few sensors around the car that regulate the fan speed and temperature. It can take a good half hour on a very warm or very cold day to have an extreme high or low temperature to work on auto at a low speed.

Works quicker if you put it on recirculate too.

maybe you need to reselect auto after selecting the temp. Some cars are like that otherwise the fan won't auto regulate.

    Thanks all for the replies.

I'm in an '11 Insignia with Auto CC so I suppose I just need to learn some patience. :)

I have an s-max. Selecting auto means that the fans adjust speed automatically to cater for the given temp but the air-con must be turned on/off manually. The one time it will come on automatically is when I select the max demist setting.

Why would you max or min the temp dial?

If the cab temp is way off the desired, the fans will spin up anyway. You won't reach the desired temp any faster maxing out the dials.
