    Hello.

I'm hoping someone can help me on this. When I turned on my laptop, dell inspiron, this evening and tried to access the internet I got the message 'cannot find server'. Even though my connection was excellent.

I tried restarting and the same issue arouse. However, it does work while in safe mode with networking. So, I followed some advice on the net like removing AVG anti virus as it may be infected, checking my settings etc. and I still cannot figure it out. DNS error was mentioned in a search but I'm unsure if it is related.

I'm not the best with computers so I'm hoping for some help on this matter with clear instructions :o

    Thanks.

You may simply just have faulty DNS settings setup on your system, try changing them to Googles public ones, 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4, see here

    Thanks for the link.

However, I'm not sure if it is a DNS issue. The message that is actually popping up is 'NT Kernel & System has stopped working'. My apologies. I think that I have been searching for a resolution for so many hours tonight and DNS error was something that came up in a search and it has just stuck in my head. But it might be an issue.

I don't suppose you've any ideas on that?

Could be a rogue anti virus scanner, try download malwarebytes on another machine and then installing it on the problem machine and see if it picks anything up! Is it showing random errors DNS being one of them?

try connecting with the ethernet cable and see if its working through that.

try connecting to the internet wifi with another computer/phone etc. need to rule out the laptop is the problem.

if no other computer connects, reset your router (make sure you have your login data for your router and ISP first.)

ask your neighbours if their net is working (if they are with the same people)

if no internet connection after all that, council probably dug through the net lines, it happens more often than they'd like to admit.

I also think you have some manner of malware gunk on your machine & should investigate that first.

Also with respect to your connection being "Excellent", I am assuming you're using Wifi to access your Internet connection. If that's the case then the excellent connection is just at the local level to your wireless access point & has absolutely nothing to do with your ability to connect to the Internet. You could have no broadband connection in your place whatsoever, but still have a local Wifi network with "Excellent" rated connectivity. Hope that clears that bit up.

Internet connectivity problems can be investigated in the following order...

Can other devices on your network access the net? If so it's your machine, not the local network or broadband.

It they can't, power cycle your wifi router. Leave it off for at least 60 seconds so all connected clients have de-associated as gracefully as possible. Power back up, wait for wifi interface to come back up. A light on the wifi router will show this.

Try again from a PC. If still not working. Power down everything, incl. Broadband modem. Leave that off for at least 3mins. Then power that on first, wait another 3mins. Then power on wifi router, then power on PCs about 2mins later.

    Does it work now?

At the base level you want a "connection". DNS is a layered issue. If you can ping Internet IP addresses then you have a connection. If DNS at this stage doesn't work, then change DNS provider to Google/OpenDNS/etc.

Despite all of that check for crap on your machine first with the likes of malware bytes. There is no point connecting an infected machine to your home network, nevermind what else could happen if it was connected to the net.
