Question re someone of disability allowance. he needs a car and is finding it hard to pay for repairs etc. if he did work for a garage in exchange for car repairs would that be income. he would be only able to work one day a week

If he is on disability he shouldn't be able to work for a garage.

It would indeed be income. It would be classed as a benefit in kind.

How would that be assessed? How would they determine how much the benefit in kind was worth?

No need to get all emotional. Perhaps you could give your friend a job supplying you with proper insults to berate people on the internet.

If he really wanted to know he could contact his local social welfare office for clarification. Disability allowance is means tested so if the value of repairs are under €120 it won't affect anything. He could calculate the value of his work by using the hourly rate of the other staff or the total cost of the repairs he is working for.

They would take a view on what the value of the repairs done was. What would someone having the repairs done be charged at commercial rates. that is effectively the pay for the work done.

He'd also need to get permission from the Department of Social Welfare before starting any type of work.

The calculation of the value of employee benefit taken in kind was the subject of nearly 10 years of litigation and this was not the outcome. THe valuation method is the marginal cost to the employer of providing the service. ON this basis, I would see it as being little more than the costs of any parts used (assuming no additional staff were employed to undertake the servicing).
