Modifying a Mark 5 Golf on a budget?

    Hi,

My first post in this forum! I recently got my first car, a Mark 5 Golf TDI and I'm looking to modify it, but on a budget!

I bought it colour coded with 17 inch alloys and I'm hoping to get some tints done and possibly some German font number plates. After that my funds will be quite limited and I'm just wondering if anybody had any further ideas on a limited budget?

    Thanks in advance,

    Wexhurdler

How much are you expecting to spend on tint?

I wouldn't go too over the top and try keep it out if the skangermobile thread, if you had the funds I'd change the radio possibly, I suggest keeping the original too, for when you wish to sell it, no need to change the speakers once the radio output is better the speakers will improve.

I think if you give it a good wash and wax it will look amazing too, maybe a clay bar scrub too.

Thanks for the reply. I was told it would cost roughly €120 for the back window and rear passenger windows? Plates €30-€40.. After that I wouldn't have a huge amount left. But if there were additional things worth adding I could always save up! :o

That sounds about right, there is no rush really, I would just try and keep it easy to change back, it would be easier to resell.

Also I recommend not blowing every cent on cosmetics, it's each to there own really on modifications, if your budget is limited, try keep mechanical maintance as priority.

I'd enjoy the car for the first few months and see what you think yourself. I've mine 4 years and only changed the radio in the last 6 months, changed the alloys and aside from that I've done nothing. The alloys were 3.5k and we're changed after after a year and the radio was 1k total.

My first car had thousands (all audio) put into it, a 05clio at that and when I sold it I seen the reality of how much money I lost/wasted on bits and bobs cause I kept upgrading, its better to save and get something decent than spend 50 here and there.

If you can barely scrape €200 to spend on mods then maybe leave it as it is for the moment. You will need money for proper maintenance/tyres etc.

I'd like to see these alloys, they sound impressive. :)

Did you integrate your head unit with the steering wheel controls? I'm tempted to change mine, but I'm just wondering how much hassle it will be to get all that stuff working properly with the new one...

Fair point! Maybe if I could turn the thread then out of interest.. With a reasonable budget what ideas would people have for modifying a golf? In addition to the suggestions already made?

would you go the tinted look? I love all the windows tinted but hate the 3 window look IMO anyway.

Would you keep the money and get it lowered or even re-mapped? You could get an extra (approx) 30bhp out of it?

+1 on the claying of the car, it will look the business.
Are there swirls in the paint?

Im getting a mk5 gti in late February.

    Plans are;

German plates (with stickers) with surrounds. €50
Eibach Pro Kit (lowering the car about 30mm at the front & 25mm at the back. €205
roof rack (going the American look). €200
potential respray of alloys.(per alloy) €50

Spend the money on some good detailing products and give the car some TLC.
