I just changed my car and it has no tax on it at the moment. It will probably take about a week for the car to be put in my name. Will I have to pay car tax for January even though the car will only be in my name a few days of it.

    thanks

If you tax it in January you will have to pay for the full month.

sorry what I really mean to ask is the new system where you cant declare the car off the road for a while and have to pay full tax while the car is in your possession come in. I can drive a different car until feb to avoid tax if I can.

The current system is still in place. If you have another car to drive until feb then you can legally have the car signed off the road in a Garda station and then tax it from feb on..

thanks for that. it was sickening me thinking of having to pay tax for one or two day of the month. We are over taxed as we are but thats a rant for another thread.

In fairness it wouldnt have been for one or two days it would have been from today or yesterday or whenever it was signed in to your name, so nearly half the month.

But as you have access to another car the easiest thing to do is just wait.

Really depends on the motor tax office and individual person your dealing with. I've gone in and taxed cars where I've been asked for the registration cert and other times I havnt been. Sometimes they just take the R100A and the money and are happy with that.

You'd need the previous owners details on the form too, assuming it hasnt gotten to shannon and been processed yet. In reality theres too many variables to bother really. It'll only take a week or two and you'll have the new registration cert.
