What to do with 15 year old car?

    Hi all,

As the title suggests I am looking for help/info on what to do with my car. I bought it last August (first car, something to learn in) and its NCT is up this month. I took it to get the NCT and it failed on a few things (wheel barrings etc.) that requires about €400 worth of work to fix. I paid €650 for the car (was bring advertised for a couple of hundred more but I knew the seller).

The car is a 1997 Volkswagen Polo.

I have just been given a car as my birthday present (Grandad bought a new car, he's giving me his old car)

Basically my question is do you think I should put the money into fixing it and sell it off, sell it as is or try and sell for scrap?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

Thanks for the reply, I think I'll look into the scrapping option. I may get a little bit more money for it that way

Paint a number on the side of it and sell it as a stock car for €500 :D

Drain the oil, put a brick on the accelerator and take bets from your friends as to how long it will run.
    Then scrap it.

You will get more for that car by selling it privately than you will get from a scrap yard. Put it on donedeal.ie for €400 listing what it failed the NCT on and accept the closest offer.

You'll get offers in the region of 50-100euro.

In fairness, cost of retest, plus work required plus hassle etc. i can't see why someone would bother with it knowing what work is needed.

Maybe someone in the trade/mechanic who can do it as a fixer upper might take a punt at €200/250. I think it is worth a try before bringing it to a scrap yard.

Very possible, and someone may buy it at that money, but from a business perspective it's not worth it.

Thanks for all the replies on this thread, I got the car fixed up in the end. The cost of the work to do be done was less than previously thought and it passed its retest on the NCT.

Would anyone here have any reasonable suggestions for what money I should be looking for if I sell it?

    Details here:

    1997 Volkswagen Polo
    Tax June 2012
    Nct January 2013
    Milage 107,000

    Thanks in advance!

Ask 850 and put up a good add, see how you go from there.

It has an NCT. People go mad for a 2013 NCT. 400 quid and its gone

995 ono (check out similar on Donedeal)

You really should sell it on. It would be great for someone else starting to drive especially since it has an NCT.

Ask €800 and be happy to get €500.
