    Spread the word, people! :)

Ah no, I had always known chicken thighs were a cheap option, but I didn't realise exactly how cheap until I bought some from my local, excellent butcher today. Just over half a pound of boned thighs for E1.50! Two dinner portions of lovely meat for E1.50? Again

Thighs are so much nicer than breast, esp in any curry or braise.
    IMO ;)

No Don't spread the word, or else the price will go up.

I love thighs, best part of the bird.

    Ooh er miss! ;)

But yeah, thighs are so much tastier than breast. Cover in honey, soy sauce, some sweet chilli and bake in the oven until crispy. Yummy!

Where was the butchers? and can other list any butchers they have gotten them cheap.

I am always reading chefs saying its a cheaper cut, and people in other threads saying they are so cheap, but I just do not come across it myself. Dunnes did deboned thighs and I think it was more expensive per kilo than their fillets. Tesco did them and it was a tiny fraction cheaper. Tesco have them skinned on the bone but I am not sure how good value they are, i.e. how much edible stuff you yield, if you throw out skin & bone.

I do much prefer thighs in curries, I just prefer the ease of fillets.

I think a lot of the time peopel see a 4 or 6 pack of thighs, and compare the price with a 4 or 6 pack of breasts.

    Hi

I often buy 5 from my local butcher for 2.50. They bone them for me ( they do it in 2 mns !!) and give me the bones, these are FULL legs not just the thighs

I get a full meal out of the chicken ( makes GREAT tandoori chicken because they leave the skin on ) , then I use the bones for the soup.

    a) Great value
    b) Taste better than breast IMO
    c) No bones to worry about if you have a good butcher.

The fat content in there makes them taste nicer.

That could be it, or comparing weight including bones.

Tesco Skinless Chicken Thigh Fillets 486G
    €4.49 (€9.24/kg)

Tesco Market Value Skinless Chicken Breast Fillets Medium 541G
    €6.00 (€11.10/kg)

Tesco Market Value Skinless Chicken Breast Fillets Large 812G
    €8.49 (€10.46/kg)

    with bones below
    Tesco Chicken Thighs 825G
    €3.69 (€0.36/100g)

It is true that you have to compare the price of the skinless boned thighs to accurately compare to breast fillet.

But, if you buy the Tesco chicken thighs for 3.69 and remove the skin and bone, you get about half the weight, which is 7.40 a kg, which is much cheaper than the breasts and cheaper than buying them already boned.

Thats what I wondered, how much you yield if you throw out the weight of skin & bone.

My butchers does 10 fillets for €10, this also works out about €7.40 per kilo as the fillets are 130-140g average stated on the pack, and I weighed and confirmed they were. I must ask them if they do thighs, never noticed any listed in offers anyway.

I did the 'yield' thing before
Chicken was 2256g listed on the pack €6.75. I put the whole thing into a wok and filled about 1/3 with water, then brought to the boil, it was breast down. ........

I got 940g of lean meat from it in total. So around €7 per kilo.

Now this was cooked, so you would have to cook thighs or breasts the same way and calculate moisture loss. But there is also the price of convenience, I don't like boning & skinning chicken, and getting rid of the waste. A tip is to put waste into bags and freeze it, then put it out on the bin day, rather than having it stewing in bins for weeks. There are only 2 in my house so our bin only goes out a few times a year.

Hi rubadub, it was Brady butchers on Belvedere Place off Dorset Street in Dublin One.

He removed the bone for me (I'm guessing for free as they were so cheap), so they were very easy to prepare. The skin just peeled off, chicken breasts take just as long to trim. :) Oh, it was E1.50 for half a pound of deboned chicken thigh, not with the bone still in. Convinced? :P
