im a stonecutter and along with everyone else at the moment we are finding it hard
the thing is there is a caretaker of a cemetery who is doing cleaning jobs nearly every second day of the week that us stonecutters should be doing but are losing the jobs because of him
this is going on in most places but this guy takes the piss he is on a good wage from the council and then goes about his cleaning jobs while he should be working for the council
now we pay our taxes, rates etc while he pays nothing

he is also taking back handers from one stonecutter, if he gets that stonecutter a job he gets some money but when people ask him about who to go to for headstones he will bad mouth everyone else and they nearly always go to this fella
this fella has 90% of new jobs in the new part of the cemetery and he only opened 3 years ago while everyone is only managing 5 or 6 jobs in that cemetery a year
    what should i do?

I would report him, not out of spite but because it the right thing to do. With all the cuts etc, its these kind of people that are keeping the social welfare bills artifically high.

i know its the right thing to do but it doesnt make it easier,i wouldnt mind him doing jobs every now and then but hes at it all the time while some stonecutters have no cleaning work to do
i know of some places that have put the workers on 3 days a week because of lack of work and they are the biggest in the city

think about it and do what you think is right, not anyone else that way youll know you did the right thing for yourself and your karma is clear so to speak :)

To be honest the guy is cheating the tax man which is costing us all money. I would definitely report him. On top of that he is taking work from people who actually need it and he already has a full wage.

One of the ways we will get out of this mess we are in as a country is to stamp out this sort of behavior inIrish society.

My primary decider would be gandalf's last statement. This sort of behaviour... backhanders, backdoor dealing and so on, is what has us in the state we're in. So, whereas he is not directly responsible (or not in any quantifiable way) his sort of behaviour is, and anyone who condones it also has a responsibility.

I think you can make an anonymous report. Can you not do that?

This guy is stealing from me, stealing from you, and stealing from everyone who pays tax. Report him. It's your civic duty.

How do you know he is cheating the revenue? The OP has no information about the guys tax affairs (nor should he).

In this instance, if what you say can be backed up, you should contact his employers, the contracts of most public servants specifically ban moonlighting.

As for the allegation about the back handers being paid to him by the new stonemason, well, what is that based on? Again, a word with the guy about how you are going to report him to his employers should do the trick. It would of course be better if you got the support of the rest of your fellow stonemasons before confronting him. Of course there are also legal implications if he has indeed slandered you and the rest of the boys, you should make him aware of that too.

Failing that maybe the OP should offer to pay him a bigger backhander!!
