    LOW-cost airline Ryanair is to create more than 1,000 jobs this year as it expands its fleet and bases around Europe.

    The operator said it would be hiring pilots, cabin crew engineers and sales and marketing staff as it increases its number of aircraft to 305 from 270 in a move which will boost its 8,000-strong workforce by nearly 10pc.

    The fleet expansion comes as it opens new bases in Billund, in Denmark, Wroclaw, in Poland, Palma, in Spain, Paphos, in Cyprus, and Manchester in the UK.

    Ryanair posted profits of €544m in the six months to September 30, an increase of 20pc, as a 13pc rise in average fares helped it offset a 37pc hike in fuel costs.

    The group said the expansion comes as it expects traffic to grow from 76 million passengers in 2011 to 80 million in 2012.

    A spokeswoman for Ryanair said some of the new jobs would be created in the UK including Manchester, though details are still being finalised.

    Ryanair previously outlined ambitious plans to almost double the number of passengers it carries and stretch its reach across Europe.

    Outspoken chief executive Michael O'Leary is reportedly aiming to increase passenger numbers to as much as 130 million over the next decade. This would make it one of the biggest airlines in the world.

    Ryanair believes that higher fuel costs could work in its favour by forcing competitors to cut capacity and routes and drive demand for budget airlines.

    Phew,good job our Government were on the ball and managed to ensure we avoided putting any of these horid little jobs in Dublin.

    Eh hello whoever wrote that article; they already are one of the largest airlines in the world by passengers carried.

    Nothing really new here.
    They have had those aircraft ordered for a long time. Only 27 left to be delivered from Boeing. (according to Jethros.co.uk)

    The problem then is what are their fleet renewal plans to sustain their size and year on year growth?

    Slow return to the era of flying absolute buckets?

    The idea of that is bringing back horrible memories of having a seat that wouldn't stay un-reclined on EI-CJE, in turbulence so the FAs wouldn't let me change seat!

    Its scary to think that there are people out there that believe the hype that MOL circulates. If he had Hangar 6 then aviation in Ireland would be screwed and you would be on the ferry as he would be holding the country to ransom.

    As an aside has no one noticed that MOL only deals in 1,000s of jobs. strange that there are never 1, 10, 29, 50 or any other obscure number of jobs created. Always a thousand or multiple thereof. Incidentally he is never asked to account for these "jobs" actually being realised at a later date. Just more smoke and mirrors.....

    I'm sorry Basil,but each time I pass Hangar 6 and see it's relatively normal looking facade I think back to the time leading up to it's official opening.....and the days of a brace of Virgins with several 737's clustered around their undercarriages.....:)

    As an aside to MOL's talk of 000's of jobs it can be argued that our own Governement can only now talk-up relatively small-beer figures of 50 or 75 so what's exactly wrong with Ryanairs 000's except perhaps that they ain't here ?

    Smoke and Mirrors it may well be,but MOL and his outfit can still puff on the cheroot and point to......

    When Basil,or Enda or anybody else can come even close to these figures for Ireland itself,then they can start slagging-off Risky,but that ain't gonna be happening anytime soon is it..????

    Yes, it's a pity it's full of Aer Lingus staff who actually pay tax in Ireland (not off-shore contractors like the vast majority of ryanair staff), employed by an airline that actually pays tax in Ireland (you can see in ryanair's accounts how little corporate tax they pay) and work for airline that employs multiples of the number of Irish people in Ireland compared to ryanair.
    Terrible shame really all those staff are not on the dole queue to allow michael to put in multitudes of foreign contract staff!
    Amazing also how none of the other, empty and similarly sized, hangars in DUB were good enough for him. :confused:

    To put a positive slant on this, they're adding 35 new aircraft to the fleet which will mean roughly 280 pilots required to fly them, hopefully creating positions for at least 140 new f/o's.

    You mightn't like the fact that they make you pay for the type rating, but here's hoping plenty of those positions are filled by Irish MEIR holders looking for their first break into the industry
