It's a Hardknott Life for Me......

So, the list of runners and riders for the Fred Whitton Challenge was published to day, starring yours truly at no. 199.

My first reaction was "Yay, my name came out of the hat"

My second reaction was "Sh!t - what have I done?!?!?!?"

Anyway for those not familiar with the event here's a link to their site.

This fellow did the 175km and 4,600m of climbing in just under 7:30. However I doubt my time will trouble him. The publicity for the event suggests there is over 4,500m of climbing involved but the Garmin and Strava sites have rides on the route showing somewhere between 2,500 and 2,700. Either way it'll not be easy and I'm already tired just at the thought of the 30% climb on Hardknott Pass.

I had done some preliminary preparation - like joining Swords CC and carbing up over Christmas (I like to prepare in good time), but now the work begins.

First up, I thought I'd start a training log to keep me honest and motivated.

My initial goal is to drop some weght - by the time I hit the start line in May I plan to be 10kgs lighter than I am now or less than 80kg.

Second, I Googled "SRAM PG1070 12-32" :) - part of my cunning plan will be to replace (temporarily) the 11-28 cassette I have with something more appropriate - I wonder if the Apex 12-36 will fit on my bike;)????

Third, hit the hills and hit them hard over the next few months.

I hope you enjoy reading the log - it's bound to feature plenty of climbing.
