    Do we want him back?

Would his inclusion unsettle the squad?

    Discuss.

    Really?

He's a good player but we have a system there now and I think he would only upset it. Besides, we've qualified for a major tournament and now he wants in? How nice of him.

It's not something that's going to become an issue because Trap has no intention of including him in the squad. In fact, I'd be surprised to see him capped again under Trap's tenure.

I would take him back into the international fold. Not right now, but after the euro's are done with he would come into contention like any other player.

While I do think uncapped players should be considered for the Euro's and we shouldn't just stick with the group that got us there out of loyalty/sentiment (the 23 players best capable of representing us and playing how we need to play should go), Stephen Ireland is a different case, and should not simply be allowed to walk back into the finals squad.

That said, if he doesn't play for us again I won't lose any sleep over it.

    Will he, no.

No, no, no, no....this lad pissed off the whole country with his carry-on and now sees the possibility of playing in the Euro championship as an opportunity to up his profile...well he can f**k right off, playing hard to get the past few years and now all of a sudden he starts this **** again??!

Trap - stay well clear, stick with the bunch of lads who have got us there...this scab didn't have a hand AT ALL in gettng us qualified, cut him off once and for all.

LOL. Even if he was available to play for Ireland all along, with his recent footballing displays he wouldn't get close to being in the squad. He has been muck since he has left City.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 25,953 ✭✭✭✭kryogen

No way will he be going, he will see?? he will see Ireland on the telly yeah thats about it.

If he really wants to come back after the euros then thats something to be looked at but not a ****ing chance of him getting back in before hand.

He doesnt deserve it, he shouldnt even be considered and he wont be

Could they not just say 'the euros' ffs

I think his recent performances have actually been quite good - looking more like the player he was at City

Don't include him, It might kill his granny.

    Please think of his granny

My first instinct is to say no but if he starts tearing up the Premier League he could be useful as an option on the bench if required.

    Do we want him back?

Now If he had the class and quality of Roy Keane in his prime? Then we would have no option but to say yes.

But since he falls well, well short. It's a fúck no from me.

But surely you wouldnt think about bringing him?

In fairness, he hasn't said anything that indicates he wants to come back. The article is really trying to create something out of nothing.

That said, he's still an arrogant twat.

As far as I know, there have been no public calls from players for him to come back, which says a lot.

It's up to the players. If they wanted him back and felt he wouldn't upset things then grand. If they don't want him, then no. Joe publics opinion shouldn't matter a jot either way

I wouldn't pay any heed to this guy at all, i think he'd be a huge distraction to the panel.

As an aside, i thought McCarthy had a really good game for Wigan against City last night, looked very comfortable on the ball.

Not a chance Trap will bring him in for Euros. After that he should be considered but he would need to eat so much humble pie he would be overweight anyway.

Certainly not from his Villa team-mates and considering thier standing within the Irish squad that says it all.

Id rather see the likes of McClean,Hoolahan,Stokes and Wilson get a run before Ireland, these fellas want to play for there country and it would be a disgrace if Stephen Ireland got on the plane for Poland.

There is a better chance of me being on the plane.

No, and that no would remain irrespective of how well he finishes out the season for Aston Villa. We have a very good thing going now in terms of morale and squad togetherness, and virtually no players who are anything other than professional. Ireland spurned us when it suited him.

After the Euros, if he wants to apologise and get in on the ground floor of the next campaign, his case could be revisited.

Absolutely, come September having a few fresh rested bodies, certainly in the middle would be a great boost to the 2014 qualifiers. A lot of teams will be fairly fatigued. I expect Germany will go to the final so they may not be as sharp. Early wins in that group will set the tone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,494 ✭✭✭Columbia

If we wants to apologise and come back after the Euros, I'd welcome anybody who would improve the squad.

If he wants to come swanning back for a major championships when he's shown (and is still saying) he really doesn't give a flying **** about the green jersey, then I'll drive him back to Birmingham myself if I need to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,148 ✭✭✭punk_one82

His recent performances have been quite good for Villa. No matter what he shouldn't be going to the Euro's. If he expresses any interest in playing at the Euro's, he should be told he will be considered after them.

    I've answered above.

    For the euros, no.

For the World Cup qualifying campaign, I would consider him, under the right circumstances.

I'm pissed of as anybody with Ireland's attitude over the last few years. Karma seemed to catch up with him as he as had a shocking time during that period. However he's getting a bit of consistency back and he might have sorted out that attitude.

So if Ireland plays out of his skin for the next month I think Trap should select him for the friendly. If he plays well in that friendly and continues to play well for the rest of the season he should be in contention for a seat on the plane. However if his attitude is still not right or if his inclusion has the chance of unsettling the current squad dramatically then possibly he shouldn't get picked.

But lets not forget that these are professional sports men who shouldn't let personal feelings affect their game. I don't want to see a talented player who could improve the squad being left behind just because some of the team don't like him personally. I want to see the Irish team have the best chance of doing well at Euro 2012, that means having the best players. I don't think Ireland should get anywhere near the first team yet, unless he plays so well between now and June that he forces himself in, but realistically he'd be more than a useful addition to the squad.

If Ireland wants to play for his country and proves his worth on the pitch then I'd like to see him included. That goes for every Irish player. The last thing I want to see is any talented player left behind when a less deserving player gets his place. So give me Stephen Ireland over Paul Green any day of the week providing their performances and quality prove it.

With all that being said would Trap do it? Almost certainly not. But it's up to Stephen Ireland to play well and force his hand.

I think he'll be waiting a long time if he expects trap to call him first. And rightly so.
I think we can forget about Stephen Ireland till we have a new manager. Personally, I never want to see him in an Ireland jersey again.

I agree with the first part - Trap won't call him, and he shouldn't either.

If Ireland wants to play for Ireland again - he needs to make the first call. I don't think he will do that so it is a 'moo' point.

I don't think he should be brought to the Euros but for 2014 he should make himself eligible for selection and let the manager decide.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

Wouldn't take him back even if if was having a great season and was a top player.

Maybe for the next qualifiers but like he will give a bollox about that.

I'm not even a massive fan of international football these days but isn't the party line that its about pride and commitment: something more than playing for wages week in week out.

Why suddenly make a mockery of that just to get somebody like him back into the fold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,351 ✭✭✭Orando Broom

Yep. We'll need every fit body for the 2014 qualifiers. He should shut his gob until July and then declare his availability for selection. I guarantee you we'll have a raft of injuries come September. This Irish team will empty the tank in the Euros ansd you'l have some very tired, sore players come September. a midfield of Coleman/Mclean (assuming he declares) Myler, McCarthy and Ireland/Brady might not be as remote a possibility as you'd think.

He shouldnt get anywhere near the team. He dug his own grave TWICE so he deserves to rot.

it's not an issue anyway. he hasn't said anything to suggest he has any interest in it. he gets asked that question before every international week. this time he was as amiable about it as he had been, probably in line with the fact that he's behaving himself and enjoying playing again

I don't believe for one second that he wants or expects to play for Ireland again

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,323 ✭✭✭Savman

To his credit, he's been playing some nice football lately (at long last) so this issue is bound to be discussed between now and June.

Can't see it happening in a million years, but stranger things have happened.

Nothing gets me more than Irish club fans excusing Stephen Irelands wankerism. Or Thierry Henrys conduct now that he is back. Both ****, and people putting club aspirations over the impact these people had on the national team, words fail me.

Its unlucky for him that his 6 irish caps means he's inelgible to play for his home country : Lalaland

If he was genuinely interested in coming back I'm sure he'd first contact the likes of Dunne, Keane and Given. I doubt they' be opposed to it and they'd likely get in touch with the rest of the lads. I doubt Trap would be opposed to it in such a scenario.

If the players and management were happy with it I would be too. It would require good PR on the part of the FAI and the man himself. Ultimately I'd love to see it happen as when he's on form he's miles better than anything else we've got.

I don't think he will want to return though.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

Irish fans really like to hate players much more than they like to like them. Ireland doesn't go around making these speeches about wanting into the Ireland squad. You regularly get one line of a quote along the lines of "I don't think I'll play again but won't rule it out" in direct response to a question from an interviewer and then we get pages of hysterical threads rehashing the same old nonsense about his car and his hair and blah de blah.

No matter what he answers these questions with, people will use it as a stick to beat him with "How dare he not want to play for Ireland!" or "How dare he think we'd want him!"

For ages posters here were going way over the top, wishing every bad thing on him and that his career would fall apart. Then it did, and the jeering stopped because it's not really all that much fun to kick a guy when he's down as we thought it would be. It's far more fun to wait until he's playing well and then start off the old bull**** about Ireland for Ireland again.

I would say your completely wrong there, would think all members of the squad would have a major problem.

Basing this on Keane's previous comments on the guys that missed the macedonia home game due to dubious reasons (wilson, gibson & some one else), Dunnes tired response of being asked about Stephen ireland. The spirit in the squad has got to a very good level and I would say that means if your inside the camp your on the inside and if your on the outside of the camp your not wanted around.
