What to look for at FIRST meeting with therapist

During the initial consultation/first appointment with a therapist what should the client look out for?

Is it just a question of the client deciding if they like the style/personality of the therapist or is it something more than that?

What questions should the client ask?

What background information "should" the therapist seek?

Do therapists do an initial "assessment" during the first consultation?

Any thoughts would be very much appreciated!

Post no. 3 on this thread/sticky might be useful.

As for assessment, a CBT therapist would do a structured assessment, other therapies take different approaches. But if you talk on the phone with the counsellor, you should know some of this in advance - never be afraid to ask! Especially given the wide varieties of therapies.
