Just back from Bus Áras feeling rather depressed- someone stole my case from the hold of the bus, and among the (many) items inside were my favourite pair of jeans and an untouched set of benefit make-up, not to mention a retainer which will cost big bucks to replace at the orthodontist's :( Feeling kinda weird that someone out there has my knickers though :/
I've only ever had money stolen before, the most being about 100e in the cinema -- anyone else have something stolen from them that they're still peeved about?

    Benefit make up?

its a makeup brand, looks all retro and cutesy, expensive stuff too.

Only females will truly understand the pain of losing benefit makeup - it's a brand of make-up which can have a tenancy to be rather pricey. Got a whole set as a Christmas pressie and hadn't even opened any of the products inside :(

I was thinking that it was something that gave borderline uglies the benefit of the doubt!

I'd say eight times out of ten they're just innocent mistakes. Absolute scum if this was taken on purpose though. Did you have any contact details on the case?

Same thing nearly happened to my OH. A woman picked up our case thinking it was her own. Had to go up and explain that she had taken the wrong one. Yeah, go me. <pats self on back>

Also give it a few days and ring the station. They're decent with lost and found stuff (if the person who took it wasn't an ar$e).

I had all my premiere league stickers stolen from my coat pocket in 1995 while I was in the yard. I'm fairly sure I know who it was too. Some **** who was 2 years ahead. Lives near me now too. A dealer now, but it all started with premiere league.

I was hoping it was accidental, but if someone had taken the wrong case then they would have left their own. No contact details inside, unfortunately- I always thought those kinds of places would be safe, especially travelling in broad daylight. Dammit, one more reason to get a boyfriend lol

I left my contact details at the station, but given that nothing was left over, they didn't seem terribly optimistic and just gave me a number and told me that apparently Bus Éireann give compensation for this kind of thing- not the full value of what was lost, but it would be something. I guess I should be glad that there was nothing of sentimental value in there.

From the title I though someone had stolen a dog. Possibly a Jack Russell.

Do you have a provision in your balance sheet for 'theft expense'.
Are you insured for loss of stock in excess of this.

Do buses have cctv on the bags when they're being taken out? Might be a thought. Although, I'd doubt it'd store a tape. Wouldn't do any harm to ring Busaras and ask.

Actually if you were alighting in the station there might be a camera on the person who snatched it.

I had €450 + my drivers licence, phone, cigarettes and pen knife robbed of me while I was unconscious.

    And my dignity.

The person who took it got off before we were at the station, cos I went to get off at Heuston and realised it wasn't there anymore, then had to stay on til the end to file a report. I talked to the main guy in busaras, but while he was lovely there wasn't a whole lot anyone could do but take down a list of the items inside as well as my name and number

Are Bus Eireann not liable for your case been stolen?

Apparently they do give some kind of compensation. I get a feeling that it was a mess up on behalf of the driver, as from his conversation with his superior, it seemed that bus drivers should get out of the bus while people are getting their luggage, or at least oversee it. Fingers crossed I'll get something- altogether the items inside add up to approximately 300e :S

Dont forget to mention about the 42" flatscreen and dianond necklace in the bag to, make sure the ins. covers them too

Horrible feeling to lose something, worse if it was stolen.
There's always a chance it looked like a bag someone 'normally' has and they lifted both by accident. Or a family took two similar bags instead of one. Fingers crossed.
If you pm me, I can help heal the blow by donating my spare boxers your way. Washed/unwashed depends on how long you take to reply! :-)

I am always so paranoid this will happen to me, especially as I always have my suitcase and with those new Bus Eireann double decker racks (they are so high up WTF?!) I end up drawing attention to myself.

Hope you get it back OP!

My wallet (with more than my month's rent that was due in it) fell out of my bag on to the floor of the near empty Belfast to Dublin Bus Eireann bus last year. I got off at the airport and went in to the shop to pay for something, realised my wallet was gone. I rang ahead to Busáras to report that I'd left it on the bus told them that my seat was only 4 rows from the top, and they said they'd check it when the bus pulled into the station.. it was late at night and it only takes 20 minutes from the airport to the station at that time.

They rang back and said they didn't find anything. There was only about 10/15 people on the bus at that time of night, and nobody was sitting in the seats across from me, so unless one of the passengers from the back of the bus spotted it on the ground, then I reckon the bus driver pocketed it (yeah I'm a cynical ****). The worst part was that I had no cards or cash on me, and while trying to sort that out, missed my connecting bus. Having to ring my father to collect me at 1am from the airport was pretty damn embarrassing to say the least.

    People are the worst.

Don't travel on the bus much, but I had to over the Christmas and I had such a fear that this would happen to me, so I took a seat beside the baggage hold hatch, so I could see if anyone stole my bag, it was a bright orange one, so there would have been no mistaking it.

ive had 4 bicycles stolen over the years.... i actually caught one guy cycling the last bike i had... i put my arm out and clotheslined him off the bike and he landed flat on his back... i took my bicycle back off him and he proceeded to call the gardai. I had the receipt along with serial number from the insurance company my bicycle was insured with and the guy who called the gardai went and got himself a charge for handling stolen goods as he claimed he bought it off someone.

This hot girl once stole my penis and hid it inside her !! :(

he claimed he bought it off someone.
He probably did in fairness; if he'd known the bike was stolen he'd hardly have called the poh-lice. Thieves are usually smart (and cash needy) enough to sell on the bike unfortunately; just be glad you got it back. It can be quite difficult to prove ownership in these cases, even with a receipt.

any luk with your bag OP?

Nope :( Looks like the whole process of claiming is a complete joke- nobody actually gets back to you. My dad's a detective (lol they chose the wrong person :P) so he's been checking CCTV at the bus stops and reported it stolen. The bus company has my number, but my phone has gone dead without a charger :/ I wouldn't be so angry, only nothing in that bag was particularly useful to anyone else

Handling stolen goods is nearly as bad as stealing in the first place, that's why the punishments are similar. Remove the demand for stolen goods and you reduce theft.

Could also have been a cheeky thief, your word vs. theirs and most people wouldn't have proof.

No, knowingly handling stolen goods is nearly as bad.

I bought my current bike from an ad in college. For all I know it might have been stolen. The cyclist in this case could have been in the exact same situation.

OP count youself lucky, It could have been worse.

One thing I learned from Greyhound in the States, you always sit at a window seat and watch your stuff like a hawk at every stop, at longer stops you get out and stand beside the baggage hold. Some bus services give you a ticket and the driver gets the luggage from the hold on producing it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 171 ✭✭Meow_Meow

Well, got a letter from Bus Éireann basically telling me (unlike what was told to me by the head guy in Bus Áras) that they are not liable for any items lost or stolen from their transport. She offered me €127 as an 'exgratia payment' (not sure how they arrived at that specific number) which doesn't even come close to covering my retainer, nevermind all the new clothes, makeup, linen etc which were inside.

Let this be a warning to you all: think twice before putting luggage in the hold of any bus, and if you must-- watch it like a hawk :(

PS if the person who stole these items (of no real use to anyone but myself) is reading this- you're a príck and may the curse of Zeus be upon you!
