I remember with their old website I could only book 4 weeks in advance I think, when I tried looking at train times and fares tonight but they were unavailable to book with only the times available.

I need to travel from Kerry to Dublin in 9 weeks time as I'm flying out of Dublin Airport and I want to book that ticket asap to try get a cheap train ticket. I wonder if the same situation of only being able to book 4 weeks ahead will still apply to the new look site?

It's a right pain in the a$s alright, I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago. The chances of getting a cheap ticket are quite high if your off peak and there is nothing on in Dublin that particular day/time.

To answer your question it still looks at if you can only book 28 days in advance. I just tried a random booking and got the following.
Reservations can be made up to 28 days in advance.
Reservations will close 90 minutes prior to departure.

The small print on the page says "Reservations can be made up to 28 days in advance."

Excellent news guys, I just did a trial run on my days (except at beginning of February!) and I may get up and down for between €20 to €36!

I will book 28 days in advance for my outbound leg and as it will be around 5 weeks until I get back into Ireland I will book 2 separate one-way tickets.

Thanks for the news! Hopefully Iarnrod Eireann will have their website sorted out by then as it is all over the place tonight I think!

Remember to keep an eye out for discount codes - if your 28 days ahead happens to fall on a Tuesday or Saturday you should be able to use an 02 discount code (15%) or if you like Irish Rail on facebook they sometimes have better discounts there for different days. I'll link the thread from Bargain Alerts in a mo.

According to the new Irish Rail website:
We’re also working on further changes to the website which will be delivered later. The main change is to carry out a back-end redesign of our web booking system

Our current web booking system, while it has grown in use significantly, does have problems which must be addressed, which regular customers will be familiar with. Our redesign will:
    - Ensure it can cope better at times of high demand
    - Allow you to manage your booking online, including cancellations and amendments
    - Have better customer service tools to give you information or process refunds automatically

These changes will be delivered to you in 2012/2013.

Hopefully this change will allow you to book further in advance and also hopefully closer to the departure time. Currently you can only book 90 minutes before the train is due to depart. Hopefully they reduce that to 30 minutes.

Done that before for trail runs to Galway and I could get up and back for €2 return.

Lo and behold, the day I booked I got 6 x return tickets for €12! Was great news for the stag kitty that weekend :D
