Is it the mk2 00 model with electric power steering or the older shape?

    What's wrong with it?

If its the 00 model the motor is underneath the ignition key.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_Punto

If you full lock now and gain the power steering light comes on and the steering is very heavy! the feker in the nct failed it on that

How I hate that electric steering assist rubbish

A naff battery could cause all sorts of weird symptoms as the PAS takes a fair amount of power.

Changing for a 2nd hand unit isn't a bad idea provided you get a good un, it's hit and miss, some are good, others are rubbish. About €50 for a unit

Alternatively, you could try this :)

    Resoldering Power Steering Motor Relays
To check the solder joints you need,

    Allen key - 4mm
    Torx bit - T7 or T6
    Soldering iron
    Soldering wire
    A steady hand
    A good light source

1 - Take off fuse box cover
2 - Take of bottom steering cowling
3 - Unclip the motor wire from ECU
4 - Unbolt the motor, theres 3 hex head bolts, here you can use 8mm socket
4 - Take out motor and boss - leave boss in car as not to loose it
5 - Take off foam gasket (try not to rip it, if u do, dont worry)
6 - unsolder the 6 main wires beside each relay
    7 - unscrew the 4 torx screws
8 - take out circuit board
flip it over and resolder all connections on relay, on each theres 3 main and 1 smaller one
9 - make sure you have plenty of solder on each one
10 - then reattach to motor, screw in 4 torx and bracket
11 - resolder main wires, you may have remove old solder to get wires back in fully
    12 - reattach foam gasket
    13 - reattach boss
14 - bolt back into place
15 - reconnect wires to computer

Then put key in, cross your fingers and start the car.

If it was a bad connection that was causing it, hopefully it will be fixed now.

    Hope this guide helps someone.

anyone know of anyone who would do this ion cork...on 2nd thoughts not so sure its safe

    Whoops :o

Simply put, take out the unit, strip it down, take out the circuit board with the relay and resolder the connections on it.

Not for the faint hearted but a damn sight cheaper than buying a new unit

well the battery is at least 2yrs old - thats as long she had the car.... could be older

saying that the car wouldnt start the other day..... battery was dead........

what fixes the power steering issue is turning the engine off and turning it back on ..
    ....

    battery or power steering motor????????

im dealing with this problem right now

i followed the procedure in the fiat forum and re-soldered the circut board inside the motor - but no difference
the steering motor was still giving a slight vibration and buzzing noise
and it would stop working every so often .

so off to the breakers yard and got another motor with ECU
replace both and no difference ..if anything worse ..

so next thing after doing a bit of research it seems the relays on the circut board fail regularly on these . bought a pair on ebay this guy sells loads of them

    Update -
    Just finished the job
Soldered in the new relays on the circuit board put it all together
Re-assembled everything and it was still the same problem .

The secondhand unit came with the full steering column
So I swapped everything over and changed the ignition barrel

Started it up and problem solved
It was the steering position sensor inside the steering box on the column all along .
