hi all.... happy new year. i,ve just put an aerial in my attic and the new digital stations came through beautifully on new tv. but when i went to get stations through saorview box in another room, the signal wasn't constant and couldn't get channels. i have a fringe distributor in attic that gives an extra 7db, would a stronger amp/distributor fix this problem for me? cheers jph

No point in getting another amp unless this one is faulty. Putting your aerial outside would be a surer way of obtaining a reliable signal, rather than amplifying a poor quality one.

There are other variables to consider; the tv may just have a more sensitive tuner, the cable & connections going to the box may not be as good.

There's a fair chance the tv is operating on a signal that just stays above the threshold for reliable reception. Digital signals have a sudden & complete failure point (the 'digital cliff'), unlike analogue, so even a 'just good enough' signal will provide perfect picture quality on your tv.

Is the aerial lead for this box plugged into a wallplate? Some of these plates & the flyleads used to connect to them can cause big signal losses.

If it's a similar setup to the tv point that works properly, there's a chance the connection inside the poor one might be less than expertly done. You could try the box on the "good" outlet to test the "less sensitive tuner" idea.

Or it could be a much longer cable; unlikely in the average house though.

Bear in mind though that any dvb-t tuner should work fine if the signal level is within spec (min. level 45 dBµV). The signal at the aerial should at least be at this level, which gives plenty of margin for tuners; attempting to raise a borderline signal with an amp to suit a slightly ‘deaf’ tuner, is only asking for trouble in terms of carrier to noise.

As ever, signal quality is all important.

The DTG recommend this signal level at the iDTV/STB input and 5dB higher if you're looping it thru sat/vcr before the DTT tuner.

What length of cable is there between the aerial & the distribution amp?
