And make sure they don't reverse into the lift with your car and forget to tell you about the broken light and scratched bumper. On the plus side, they did sort it out with a minimum of fuss.

Seriously though, good value. Don't fall for the extras. Make sure to find out what oil they are using, and check against your owners manual to see if you are happy with it. Get them to tell you what they think you need done. Then check with your preferred garage.

Oil provided is 10W40 standard, other oils carry a surcharge.

For 39 quid? I'd say top it up and advise it was a bit low.

Sounds like great value, but no spark-plug check for petrols and no air-filter check.

for 39 euro you basically get an oil and filter change and a check around to see what else they might be able to sell you..

excellent value tbh .

spark plugs don't really get checked... just replaced at recommended intervals.

Seen 5L of 10w40 in Halfords for around €25. I got 5L of 5w30 for 25.59. Its Halfords own brand.

You can do the oil and filter change yourself for a slightly cheaper price on most cars (25eur for 5l oil, and approx 10eur for oil filter). But this is still a very good deal to pay a few bob extra for them to do it, and to check all the other basics - to tell you what needs looking at. Then you can go away and consider what else really does need to be sorted and do it in your own time.

I got this last time the offer was around. Was a few weeks waiting for an appointment. And then the usual sales pitch for a full service. Almost to the point of begging when I dropped it in. Then I got 4 phone calls telling me about stuff I needed done and could they do it. Stuff that my regular garage didn't mention a few months later. And they're very good. So just resist any extras and their bullshít and it's a good bargain for an oil change.

It doesn't fix the main problem - water in the fluid.

Replacing is only necessary every 2 years / 30k miles according to most manufacturers. Its very wasteful to just change it willnilly a good service place will have a boil tester to check water content.
Topping up is nothing to do with the water it should be to compensate for the level drop as the cylinders extend as the pads/shoes wear, but by the time the fluid gets near the low level its probably time for new pads anyway or you have a weep/leak.

I know how much oil costs can range, thats what concerns me. I assume they are buying it in bulk, but how much are you paying to get what your car needs,It sounds cheap, too good to be true, maybe they are hoping to make the money on the extra business from the unwary?

Just booked my service for this Saturday using the voucher. So far, so good! My car is a diesel. I presume they all take the same engine oil or am I going to be fleeced by them for a different kind?

My OH was caught a couple of years ago with them when she went in for a regular service - they claimed she needed front discs (claimed the existing ones were warped) - would not release the car unless they were changed as they claimed the car was unroadworthy -

She stumped up approx €120 +vat before they would let the car be released. Had to take them to the Small Claims court to get the money back (had the old discs independently checked by a main dealer and they were ok!)

Like I said, beware - not tarring all outlets with the same brush, just word to the wise!

Is this a a franchise and every branch is/could be owned and managed by someone else?

As a general rule each manufacturer specifies a standard an oil must meet before it's approved for use in their engines. Gone are the days when 10w40 or 15w40 met all needs. Have a look in e.g. Halfords who do their own-brand oils to Ford, Vauxhall / Opel, VW, etc specs.

Surely this is bordering on 'theft' or something, I would have called the guards and at least got the keys and access to my car back.

Yep, similar happened before and I told them I was taking my car and if anyone felt like stopping me taking my own property back, I would deal with them as I would with any thief or mugger. They didn't stop me.

Its funny how they are advertising it... 'Auto Service Including Oil and Filter Change for €39 at Advance Pitstop' its not a service, its an oil and filter change with a load of 'checks', not a full service. Basically its a way to get you in and tell you thats there is a load of bits that need changing where they will charge you full whack.

I'm sorry I bought it too. they sound like a right crowd of chancers. I read the small print on groupon and once the deal closes and they email you your voucher, you have 7 days to request a refund and tell them you dont want it. Thats what I will be doing. the deal closes at 23.59 on 20/1/2012 (tomorrow).

Had really bad experience with them before and swore never again.
Driving out after getting a shock replaced (and paying them) the steering wheel was at 45 degree angle while driving straight... brought it back 5 min later... and was told it was not like that when they were finished with it!!!. There was a lot tutting, looking at the watch and shrugging the shoulders. Told me "well the car is 8 years old" Tried to charge me extra to fix a problem they caused. Gave them my solicitors business card (one of my best mates) told them contact him for payment.

a service should check & change all items - air filter, spark plugs etc no matter what the cost.
i do when I service mine - even though I don't have to - it's not that expensive.

Just got my car back after using them for the second time with this voucher and the previous one back in September, found them very good to deal with. They gave me a list of things that had to be done outside of the service and I asked them do they all have to be done now and they told which I could leave until the next service. I found them very efficent.

It is a service - an oil change service and inspection. They can call it an oompahloompah for all it matters; if they do what's advertised and do it well then it's well worth the advertised price. There's at least one satisfied oompahloopah customer here so far so it must be OK in that branch at least.

I used this voucher the last time it was available. They changed the oil/filter and told me there were a couple of other things needed doing. I had the NCT coming up a few weeks after so decided to go ahead with the test to see if the car really did need work. Sure enough, the car failed on the same things. I went somewhere nearer to me to have the work done so can't report on how they are for that.

Ok, so I left my car in this morning at 9.00. I took the precaution of bringing a spare set of keys with me in case they impounded my car but I need not have worried!

I got a call at 11 to say it was done and that 2 bulbs were not working (which I already knew). I said I would replace them myself as I had bought new bulbs. No problem. I was told that as it was going for the NCT next month I may want to have the headlight and wheels alligned as they were very sticky with them on the test. I said no thanks and they didn't push me on it at all.

Very pleasant transaction and very happy with the deal!

I got one of these the last time round and was really pleased with them I wasnt charged any extra even though going on previous experiences with other garages was sure I would be. I didnt have the car that long and it was great just to get it checked over! really couldnt fault them

Two yrs ago I went for a free pre-nct check and they recommended several things and wheel alignment being the one that worried me most as they said it was important.

Cost of checks, €104. I didn't bother and car sailed through the nct.

My tyres are wearing down evenly so no need for allignment anyway.

A foreign workmate of mine though was taken totally to the cleaners, they fitted 4 new tyres which he never requested and couldn't diagnoise/fix the problem he went in for in the first place.

Have to say I was a bit sceptical after reading all the comments in this thread but I couldn't fault the service I got. Was told I needed to get new brake pads and discs (which I knew anyway) but there was no trying to push me into a sale or anything. He told me how much they'd do it for and left it at that. Overall very happy and the car is running very smooth again.

Brought in car. Came back and was told 4 tyres needed changing before the nct same day and cheapest they had was €90 each (ford c max 2004). Didn't get the tyres and got nct done...not a word re tyres (did fail for emissions though :rolleyes:). Will NOT be back!

Hi sorry to dig this one up but this deal is on again but one thing in the small print concerns me. It looks as if they only supply a half litre of engine oil and charge you for the rest. This is hardly correct. Could someone please confirm, thanks.

Wouldn't waste my time with it. Brought mine in last week, they clearly didn't top up any of the fluids bar the oil change. Also didn't check the horn as it doesn't work and nothing was said to me!

Must be a typo, most cars need 3.5 or more litres of engine oil.
I would expect bigger (>3L) engines might need more.

Call them & ask.

Also, be wary of the supplied oil, mine needs full synthetic & that's
often costed near €50 on it's own.
You should check what your vehicle needs & be 100% sure you are getting the correct oil for it,
else this deal will cost you €€'s in the long run.

Thanks probably a typo alright. Mines a 99 1l yaris with 150000km+ so at €39 for oil and filter is ok for me.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was correct. Was about to comment that they offer a free NCT pre-check that would cover all of the items in the offer except topping up fluids/oil change.
They now have a "pass first time offer" for €99. The catch is if you fail they only pay for your retest if they do more than €100 of repairs. If you only fail on a small item like a bulb for example you get nothing.
[They also list battery as one of the items, NCT don't check this.]

My opinion is if you need tyres go to advance pitstop, want a service go to a good indy, or even a dealership.
