Electric fencing

    Hi
Just wondering about the laws for electric fencing because my aunt who has access rights to her house via a farmers land and he put electric fencing along the length of the drive to the house which is fair enough however we think the voltage is to high as once one of te kids tapped off it while opening the gate and you could smell singed hair off him. And another time a neighbour backed into the fence and had a burn along his back from it. I'm asking this because I recently saw a sign on the fence saying it was at a voltage for an elephant? Is this legal if he only has cows in the field? And he also wouldn't let a proper fence be built

there are no laws - only best practice.

If it's along a public area they should put up warning signs.

There's another thread about this on here - search for it. Probably best that your aunt talks to the farmer.

BTW - I doubt there's an elephant setting as it would kill his cows. However, if you say there's signage then he has complied with the best practice.

If the kids are touching it then you need to engage in parental guidance and if people are backing into it then either it's too close to the roadway or they need to improve their driving.

In any case it's a conversation with the farmer you need. I'd also suggest walking along the fence and having a look at what equipment he is using.

Is he refusing to lower the voltage?

You'd be better off with the voltage upped! Amps cause the damage and can kill. Volts give an intense shock but not harmful (but I'd rather you than me).

No commercially made electric fence will harm a pet or human if installed correctly. A farmer certainly does not want his livestock injured either.

The fence is just along the drive that goes through the field. But there is a gate at ye end of the drive and people accidently hit off of when opening the gate everyone knows that it's electric and the kids know not to touch it but it just happens sometime
I'm not sure if there is any elephant setting but there is one sign that says its for elephants. And it shouldn't cause burns or singed hair if it's only keeping cows? I have touched fences for cows and it never really hurt. They have talked to the farmer he is an assh0le to say the least (yes I know you will all think I'm bias) but basically there is no talking to him. I just would have assumed fences had to be within certain voltages depending on what animals are being contained?
