ok I have the following work to be carried out if any body has had this sort of work carried out , an idea of price would be great . Also would it be better to get the material myself and pay for the labour or just get somebody in and supply and fit. I read that contracts only pay the lower rate of VAT ? . Also any recomendation of contractors who do a great job at a good price would be a great help

21.5 mtrs of fencing , concrete posts and gravel boards.
    15 mtrs2 concrete
45 mtrs2 paving cheap alternative to indian sandstone
    15 mtrs2 gravel , gold buff

    Many thanks

Get everything down in writing. It might be a bit of an overkill to go with a formal contract but if you feel more content then thats the route to take.

However most people would either make a list of the entire works including prices and get it signed by the person doing the works or alternatively get the written quotation (if it's detailed enough) and work from that

Yes get it in writing is the best idea as when the job is finished you have the quote and if these landscapers know their stuff have the right staff and equipment and do a propper site inventory I have seen some jobs where they took a lot of advantage of their clients.... FILLERS was a great quote from the experts during the economic boom.....
