Section 42

A farmer whose land I shoot on asked me today if I could get a license to shoot deer all year round. We were on the way to shoot a few clays and spotted a 12 point Sika stag and a few hinds and he was telling me the were doing serious damage to hedges and flattening out grazing land a lot.

How do I go about getting a section 42, or would this be reason enough for one?

You can not apply, The farmer applies and nominates you as the stalker on the form.

If they are damaging crops, the Ranger inspects and agrees with the Farmer then one will be issued.

    Sometimes restrictions are put on.
    Only Stags and calves etc.
Sometimes they say if you see a calf at foot shoot calf first and then the Hind.

    It is very area specific.
This is my experiences from having being a nominated stalker in the recent past.

There has to be very definite damage, I had deer tracks through Barley

i would think you will need to get written permision from the farmer to shoot deer at his request all year

    you would need

letter from farmer stating reasons for shooting deer all year

no harm to get him to get it stamped by a local garda station to make it legit

land folio no.s and address of same

    amount of acres of land

these should be a good help in getting it.
but dont forget the farmer would need call you to shoot one that is causing damage and be willing to verifi that in wrighting when he calls you out to cover yourself

you would also need pm me to give me a carcus as im getting hungry thinking about it :)

Thanks, Tac. There are tracks everywhere and it is very evident where they have been destroying ditches, etc.
It's not something I ever gave much thought to, TBH, but when he mentioned it today I said I would look into it.

Can two shooters be nominated? Myself and the brother in law may have to fight it out for the privilege if not.

In my experiance with these. Yes, can nominate more than one shooter.

Tac pretty much summed it up, but again from experiance ones I have seen have always been issued for a fixed period, definatly not all year.

Yes, I forgot to say 6 weeks, I got two running back to back(
Farmer had to apply twice, takes a few weeks to get one)
,but once corn was harvested they were over obviously; however this brought us up to last week in August and then season opened again 1st week sept

Why not get started now there is still a month or so in the season i would be taking out the does now. Its only way to reduce numbers there. I am interested thou that you saw a twelve point Sika there the most i seen was a ten pointer. Are they hybrids in your area?? You could still get the farmer to get a section 42 for you but in my experinse they will put down stags only to be taken around this time of year which with Sika is fairly tough cause of time limits on the licence and Sika stags are shy old creatures.
    Good luck with it!!
