    Hi folks.

Whats a good broadband speed? I'm with O2, paying E20 per month, for what seems rubbish to me.

I just ran a speed test, it came in at:

Download Speed: 199 kbps (24.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 88 kbps (11 KB/sec transfer rate)

It just took 2 mins 30 secs to download a 40 sec youtube clip.

And? What is your advertised service? DSL? 3G? Cable? Fiber?

Phew! I'm glad I started this thread. If a person in need of some assistance is ever to get friendly, helpful advice, Boards is the place to come!

I'm using the "dongle" modem. At the moment, "EDGE" is appearing in the O2 window, but it changes all the time. It could be 3G, GPRS, UMTC, and I think there's a few more.

I know. Thats why you are here.

    o2 speedtest

o2 coverage maps, which look mind numbingly accurate in contrast to US carrier sites.

You could perhaps check to see if you are in a strong/weak coverage area. You could also run the test outdoors to see if you get a better signal outside the home, which seems to be how the system is setup.

    Thanks Overheal.

I did all that. My speed results are above, I'm in a perfect area for indoor reception, and its the same in different locations around the house, whether indoors or outdoors.

My question is though, is the speed above fast enough to be called "broadband"? How does it compare with what people out there in the land of Boards experience? Is that a fast speed, or is it just that my computers are slow? Its as slow as the dial-up connection we used to have years ago, so maybe its my computers. (Although I recently updated this one to W7 and have tried brand new laptops belonging to friends, same results)

Its not the fastest advertised speed that they discuss on the site at any rate. It's DSL speed, and slow DSL at that. DSL is/was typically 128kbps but now goes as high as 1.5Mbps.

Have you talked to O2 about it?

I have indeed, I've PM'd the reps on this site, they're looking into it. I cant access the O2 website because by the time all the graphics etc. are downloaded, my internet connection keeps timing out! It just happened there now, this is the second time I've had to type this!

Thanks Dyer. My menu options dont go like that. Its Settings > Band selection > GSM900/1800/WDCMA2100

I set it to that. No difference.

for 3G what you want is WDCMA2100, is there any way to force that? if you can see a network type option as well as what you stated above try setting it to 'WDMCA only'.. if that doesnt pick up a network, you are probably stuck with 2G.

on 3G you should get up to 300KB/s download, thats the best ive seen on my side anyway, at worst 100K and up. having said that since about october service with O2 has been pretty abysmal, im currently relegated to the EDGE network myself and can do nothing more than browse.

imo, this is good enough reason to get out of a contract if you are tied into one.
