It can vary I assume, but I am guessing things such as first aid, fire safety and perhaps stewarding. AGS would be standard public order and policing but usually private security firms would do the bulk of the security work with the Gardaí in place to deal with any criminality which may occur.

I am not so sure about the role of the Civil Defence in particular at that event, it would vary from venue to venue and the likes. I would assume they would be in place to provide first aid and perhaps they have the contract for the fire safety at the event which would also involve the organisation and implementation of a venue evacuation if needed be.

thanks for that....any idea what the requirements are for joining>?

Its a voluntary agency, not sure of any specific requirements but I am guessing if you have a decent level of fitness and are willing to commit some of your time to the organisation then that is enough as it is. Any training that you require in order to undertake duties will be provided.

If you want to join, your best bet is to contact your local Civil Defence unit. They will give you the general details on admission requirements and when they are recruiting. You can find a list of all units here.

I'm a steward for G4S in thomond, basically the civil defence are there to provide back up for the red cross and for the stewards in the event of emergency! AGS are there to deal with criminal activity and to remove people from the ground should that be necessary, as stewards we aren't supposed to lay a hand on anybody whereas guards can!

thats cool....i must say one thing about a particluar stewards attitude there was disgraceful towards a patron when asking for his ticket

Civil Defence are there for health and safety altough they are rarely needed because Ambulance crews and Red Cross usually are at the scene of any incidents before them. No need for them realy. At least they get a free ticket for the match.

Same guy is starting training to be a guard soon, so I reckon he's having a premature power trip!! You might have noticed he spent most of the time talking to the guard who was up in that corner!!

i dunno i saw two female guards and one inspector didnt see anyone talking to them....and if the man had got aggressive it woulda taken a lot of people to restrain him he was about 6'3 rugby built

Garda recruitment hasn't happened since 2008 and there has been no intakes in over a year......so i doubt he is starting Garda training soon.

Maybe Garda reserve? In which case I hope he is weeded out very soon. 95% of reserves are as professional as it gets, but there is always this 5% that wrecks it for everyone.

CD in Dublin does lack organisation and the different Dublin units can be hostile towards each other. very often your duties include standing there and looking pretty. sometimes you might do something useful like provide first aid.
all of these organisations work independently of each other which can be chaotic if you suddenly fight yourself working with them.

Irish Red Cross are there to provoide first aid cover to the public and assist HSE with players if needed. Civil Defence are there as part of the safety team and assist the stewards or Red Cross if needed. G4S do the majority of the security work and i believe they along with Thomond Park organize the stewards
