Friday Departure from Kilmainham Gaol to Dublin Airport

    Hello,

I will be departing from the Kilmainham Gaol to Dublin Airport on Friday morning, the flight departs around 11:00AM so I assume it would be best to be at the airport by 8:00AM or 9:00AM. This, however puts it right in the middle of rush hour.

Traveling northeast (via taxi) from Kilmainham (Gaol) -- in order to get to the airport by 8:00AM or 9:00AM; what time would one suggest leaving 6:00AM, 7:00AM?

BTW-- in terms of arrival; incase anyone was wondering on a Saturday morning (6:00-7:00AM arrival time at the airport)-- to Kilmainham was about a 20-25minute taxi ride via the M50.

    Thanks in advance.

What airline and country are you going to? Three hours is wildly excessive for Aer Lingus short haul for instance - but more sensible if its to the US.

From the Hilton (I assume) the quickest route will be outbound, against traffic flow, to the M50 and up to the airport. I don't expect there will be much traffic problems at any point.

I wouldn't leave earlier than 7am, and expect 40-50mins or so to the airport; but there may be someone with more specific experience of that traffic flow.

That arrival taxi will certainly have been a "ride" otherwise known as a complete pisstake. It will have been at least 50% longer than travelling through town, unlikely to have saved more than 10 minutes and cost EUR10 more (at least).

Airport in the morning from town shouldn't take more than 45 minutes, even less if you pay EUR3 for the port tunnel northbound.

An alternative would be to get the Dublin Bus route 747 from Heuston Station - €6 one-way to the airport with limited stops. http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/All-Timetables/7471/

Getting to the Port Tunnel from the Hilton in Kilmainham could take the best part of half an hour at that time of the morning. Bus lanes only help so much.

Exactly and from port tunnel entrance to airport shouldn't take much more than 15 minutes. I used to do this weekly.

To save a few quid, its not worth the getting up earlier and risk of delays especially considering that the M50 is effectively "turn left and keep going" from Kilmainham.

    Hello--

Thank you for the replies. I will be flying Delta airlines to the US. So to confirm, the best way is to use a Taxi and leave between 7:00AM - 8:00AM.

    On a side-note, any issues booking a taxi with 8202020 taxi's?

No issues with that taxi firm, they offer a discount.
Another one is http://asaptaxiswestdublin.com/ who are based next door to you in Ballyfermot and will give you a good fixed rate.

If it was a short flight to the UK, then you don't need three hours at the airport and I'd take the bus from Heuston

But since you've a long haul flight ahead of you, I'd just pay the taximan and cut out the messing

At that hour of the morning and on a Saturday there would have been no traffic and Kilmainham is pretty central, he should have taken you through the city centre.
You got done sorry to say

There is a taxi rank outside the Hilton hotel, I assume it's there you are staying. The main issue I'd have with that firm is that they tend to deal with account work first at peak hours so if there is any delay you may be hanging a little bit; no fun if you are trying to make a flight home but you should be fine, all told.

If you are willing to walk a few hundred meters, go to the traffic lights at the dual carriageway close to your hotel and hail one from there; it will have the benefit of bus lanes most of the way to the airport and you won't be waiting long either.

I wouldn't trust that intersection for a taxi that early on a saturday morning. I'd order one (hotel wil do it if you need, they'll have their prefered company who won't want to annoy the hotel...)

At that time of morning I'd expect a journey time of roughly 30 minutes (outbound on n4, northbound on m50).

Nor me. It's a Friday she wants the cab :)

Ha ha. Oh dear, where did I see Saturday?!

I still wouldn't trust catching a cab there but the M50 will be a lot busier. Still the route to talk IMO

That latter route goes via the NCR. At that hour of the day you'd be zany to use that route given it's single lane, through 3 bottle necks and it has no bus lane until the Mater. Now, I remember why I never trusted Sat Nav's :)

Something else to bear in mind, a phoned taxi calling to the Hilton will have little choice but to pull in opposite the courthouse and hence onto one way Inchicore Road as the SCR bay is likely to be full. Add traffic delays which are inevitable at this hour and it will put close to fiver onto the trip.

I travel to/through Inchicore every day. There's no problem on the Inchicore road

Apart from it going the opposite way to the shortest route, that is :)

There is no taxi rank outside the Hilton - just some parking spaces that are permanently occupied by taxi drivers.

Hi, don't know if you got sorted but the taxi company 'GALA CABS' do a fixed rate of €20 (plus toll charge) to the airport from Kilmainham. Their number is 01 6266266.

It says on the card that they gave me a month ago that the offer is for a limited period so I'd maybe check it's still going.

*I've no affiliation with the company and only used them once but had no problems.
