    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calp

Rent a car(complete with child seats) and drive up to Calpe. It's a pleasant spot, about an hour up the coast from the airport. There are plenty of hotels and apartment blocks, for accommodation.

Hi Cavan....so, how did you get on? Would you recommend Calpen for family with 2 toddlers?

He hasn't been yet Brian! He states in the OP that he's travelling in June.

Try tripadvisor.com for reviews and advice too... They tend to have a fair bit of local knowledge available.

Can't give you info on Alicante, but hsve visited Calpe and Denia and both are lovely. Am mam of 4 all under 6, we go to same spot, Torrevieja, every year - about 40 mins from Alicante - love it! Much maligned, sometimes, but like anywhere, depends on where you go/what you do. With my lil uns if know the following: self-catering with smallies is a must - they seem to eat 4 times their body-weight each day - fresh air/activity etc makes them starving! Somewhere to prepare picnic/feed before going out for evening (mine always have pasta/pizza/baby dins bout 4/5pm then eat more in restaurants).
DVD player a must - June will be hot, you need to have a way of keeping them indoors for afternoon when its at its hottest.
Pool proximity more important than beach proximity. Can trot to pool and back, easy. For beach you'll have to have umbrellas/drinks/food at ahnd - a load if you're walking any distance with 3 yr olds. Not saying dont do beach, but as OP says, car is VV ueful. Not to mention for carrying food/ water etc. But as recent good spell of weather is reminding us, soooo easy to mind kids when weather is fine! Playground or other nearby would be handy too. Have a great time. Can give further info re Torre if you're interested.

Went for 3 weeks last year to playa flamenca/la zenia area kids didnt want to come home, so much to explore beaches everywhere and just so so cheap! I basically shopped for food once a week in the local lidl but ate out most nights, pool bars etc plentifull, book a villa and car and u cant go wrong
