Okay I smoke and with the odd exception, I do so outside. As such I've grown into the pathetic habit of knowing what diesel motor is about to come around the corner. Examples, I know when one of the two TDCI Mondeos is about to pop around the corner or when the PD passat B4 is coming. The 307 HDI is also pretty distinctive as well as the D-4D Avensis and Corolla are. I can only really foretell two petrols, An Alfa 156 and a VVTI (very very technical indeed) Avensis.

So can you decipher what motor is about to come into view merely by its sound ? Or am I just a tad touched ?

I'll always know a 1.4 astra from the annoying clicking sound it makes. a 1.8 petrol Rav4 from the metallic rattle from the exhaust. I'll always he able to identify a 1.6 Avensis avensis from the noise of the starter, same with the old type 1.0 Yaris.

Land Cruiser or Hilux 3.0 easy peasy too.
1.9 TDI is easy even for a beginner.
3 cylinder Yaris/Aygo very distinctive too as is the BMW 4.4 engine.

+1 There was an unmarked Garda one where I grew up and we always knew when it was on the way for us after the Pub Distinctive exhaust sound!

Any time there's an FTO V6 in the vicinity, my ears prick up. Can probably sense their presence from 5 miles. Sadly they're becoming a rarity

    Mazda RX8 is very distinctive.

Also, the felt brigade all have the "dump valve" on their heaps.
