TV rots your mind. TV dumbs you down. TV controls you. I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but I just really needed to get that off my chest. Thanks for listening.

I'll join the debate in an hour, but I'm currently committed to writing a document on "The declining standards in punctuation on boards.ie"..

Ah ffs.. I have to give a serious answer now ???

Well if you are arguing that TV is NOT a poor substitute for life you could argue the usual cliché sort of things ... like movies nowadays are so real (spout on about 3D, CGI, green screens etc etc) that you can feel completely immersed in the movie that you are watching, allowing you to experience things that would never be possible in your real life...

Also, if TV WAS a poor substitute for life, nobody would have a TV.. i.e. everybody would be too busy LIVING.. finish off the with line "stick that in your proverbial pipe and smoke it".. I always found that to be a winner..

Perhaps I was a bit harsh in my first post. It's not all bad I suppose. It can be a good source of information. Documentaries are really the only things I can bring myself to watch anymore. But everything is subjective I suppose.

    One could argue...

    - That TV provides a form of entertainment for families and such.

    - And that it provides important news and weather and ****.

    - It can be educational for both adults and children.

    - That it brings people together in some respects. Both in the home and out and about in conversation.

You won't catch me saying any of the above. But in my opinion, they're not particulary unreasonable opinions.

Might be interesting to say with TV documentaries and educational type programming.. TV helps you to live, enjoy and experience your life better

It's a load of twaddle really, but the sort of stuff that people in the Department Of Education love..

How could tv be a substitute for life? It's not Tron!

It's just an element of modern life- a medium through which which news can be shared, ideas can be discussed, stories can be told, messages can be spread, items can be sold. All of these things have been done throughout human history through different media.

Your opposition will probably talk about people living vicariously through television or wasting time watching too much tv but however people choose to engage with television they're still actually alive. Is it not living to have watched the twin towers fall on television? Is it not living to see a great episode of Deadwood or the Wire and think about life and history and society? Is it not living to be able to quote lines from Father Ted or The Simpsons with your friends? I'm pretty sure I was living in the real world when I did all these things.

It's part of life- nothing can be a substitute for life.

Tv just like everything else in life, its great in moderation,

TV is just an evolutianary step in entertainment, from the gladiator arenas of rome through to the great shakespeare plays, and the great adventures told by jules verne and many others,

TV and film is just a steping stone in ways to tell great stories, all the reality TV stuff really clogs the whole thing up but theres great stories being told all over the world,

youll just never have time to read or watch them cause life will always get in the way,
