    Hi all,

I am looking at a 2006 Peugeot 407 1.6hdi with 106,000 miles on clock. Its a good price and took it for a drive today and it seems fine. I was looking at a few previous discussions about these cars on this site and am kind of been put off after reading them - they seem to have a few common problems (electrical, ball joints etc). I'm no expert on cars so was just hoping for some advice/feedback from anyone who has/has had one please. Thanks in advance

Bring a mechanic, even if you have to pay him:pac: well worth the money

They go through turbos and engines, so much so a good second hand 1.6 engine can fetch up to €1,500.

Apparently the sump needs to be dropped and cleaned ever third service or so.

Thread carefully, if it has a service history you'll be in a better position.

How much is the asking price?

First two I spotted on donedeal with new engines

Are there many differences between this engine and the 1.6 tdci in the focus?

Would discourage someone from buying a focus too then?

I assume turbos etc are different?

No, as far as I know they're pretty much the exact same setup.

It's selling for approx €4900, don't think there's a service history with it but I'll definitely bring a mechanic with me when going back. Its drives fine, the engines good, I suppose every car has its common problems but I just didnt want to make a mistake of buying something that was going to end up costing me a fortune on diagnostic tests, mechanic fees etc. I can take the normal servicing, small bits and pieces that need doing with every car but if this was a car that was going to end up costing more that its worth I'd leave it

Generally the 407 isn't a great car in my opinion. if reliability is your main concern then maybe buy something else.

I think Ford use a different make turbo but I could be wrong.

OP at that mileage the main concern would be around the DPF, if it hasn't already been replaced then it might need to be soon enough. They cost in the region of €800 to €1k. Service history is very important so make sure the right grade of oil has been used over the car's life as this will be the difference between how long the turbo lasts.

Also drop a user here called Row a PM, he is an expert on these cars/engines and can advise you on other things.
