Transition from Young character to Old

Maybe not phrased the best in the title!

Anyway, was watching The Debt last night where there were characters in the present and flashbacks to younger versions of themselves. I was struck by how unalike the young version of the character/actor compared to the older version was. For example Sam Worthington played Ciaran Hines as a young person. There was no resemblance in the slightest as was the case with the other actors comparing their past and present. It was just like they were trying to get as many big names in as possible.

This really struck me this morning when I watched 'La Vie en Rose' (great film by the way!). The child in this was exactly what I'd imagine Marion Cotillard to look like in her younger years. Her eyes were identical. in fact, if you showed me a picture of that kid I would have said 'yes, that's Marion Cotillard as a child!!' It was the best child resemblance I've ever seen.

Any of these good/bad similarities strike anyone else in these films or others?

It's easier with child actors I guess because there isn't the same pressure to cast a well known actor.

But I completely agree about The Debt. The casting was all wrong. This was a problem in The Notebook as well.

always thought the young kid who played William Wallace as a boy in Braveheart was the spit of Mel Gibson

I saw a film where they used footage from an old film featuring the same actor when he was younger for flashbacks.

I can't remember what it was though, and I want to >_<

edit: It was The Limey - It used footage of Terence Stamp from the film Poor Cow, where he was much younger.

All the other characters looked very similar also. If they gave Oscars for casting, this flick would be a sure shot to win.

"Atonement" was one of the worst, Briony's entire jawline changes, her mouth changes shape, her eyes get much darker.

this is what Saoirse Ronan actually looks like at that age:

I actually think Atonement is one instance in which multiple actors playing the same character at different ages really works. Garai and Ronan don't look exactly like, but they are very clearly on the same page in terms of how they play the character. I mean, I don't think River Phoenix really looked like Harrison Ford, but he captured enough of Ford's mannerisms and temperament to convince you that you were watching the same character. Where as I never felt I was watching the same characters in The Debt and The Notebook. I just seemed like I was watching a different movie every time they jumped to the present.

I haven't seen The Debt but I completely agree with you on The Notebook. I never bought that Ryan Gosling grew up to be James Garner. Not only do they look nothing alike but they have such different personae. What was the casting director thinking?

    I really disliked that film.

In 'An Officer and a Gentleman', I always thought the young Zach looked very like the older Richard Gere character:

And also in 'Beaches' the girl who plays a young Bette Midler is a dead ringer!

Phoenix apparently watched tapes of Harrison Ford outside of his Indy roles, to get a sense of the actor rather than the character. Worked a treat & you could really see a younger version of Ford in that flashback. Awful shame we never got to see more of the younger Indy

I always though that Old Rose and Young Rose acted and looked like completely different characters in Titanic (not only because of the age difference).

Big Fish was well done with Ewan McGregor/Albert Finney and Alison Lohman/Jessica Lange
