its that time of year again...

A smoke filled arena, beer bellies, sweaty arm pits, tattoos, tacky jewellery, cursing and swearing and that's just the women!!

As they cheer on their husbands, the supreme athletes whose super fit bodies are on display for the world to see.

Its the only time you can watch sport on TV without feeling inadequate.

Yes its a world away from Wimbledon but dont you just love it...Darts :D

    a real working class sport

Great win for Man Utd today.

Who was right in the 2002 World Cup; Keane or McCarthy?

    ah that should do it...

they would show two flys going up a wall on europsport, its not a great gauge to be fair.

I'e been compulsively watching he Darts championships.

The thing is I don't even like darts.

That giant pub looks like a right laf.

I really like darts. I hate this shit of sitting around a pub staring at our feet. Whenever I go to a pub with mates (and it's not too busy) we always ask the owner if we can borrow some darts.

It's a good way of unwinding; you drink more slowly than you would with a glass in front of you and therefore you talk more to those in your company. 'Doing something' with your hands while talking things over (problems, relationships, work) can actually be a little therapeutic (I find).

I'd choose darts over propping up the bar any day. Love it.

    Spot on.

I like a game of pool or poker or something other than just sitting there as if it's a drinking parlour.

I'm **** at darts though. Can never decide what way to throw the darts.

    I actually quite like darts.

You're clearly misinformed or ignorant for the following reasons.

1). There is no smoking in the arena, it's not allowed.
2). Many of the younger players are quite slim, although I think it is fair to say the players are very heavy in general.

    Great sport!

I'd watch it the odd time out of sheer boredom. One thing I can't stand though is the absolute rape of Planet Funks Chased by the sun. Is it really necessary to use the same loop of the track for years on end?

    BDO darts is pure ****.
The PDC 2012 final was about 2 weeks ago.

Me personally? For sure, but I'll watch anything competitive from golf to skiing rather than some Big Brother/ MTV kind of tv,

I'd rather pull my hair out than watch Sex and The City. Some people would rather pull their hair out than watch darts. Luckily we are not all homogenous.

It's actually quite interesting watching the darts players going through stages of hitting the treble 20 in flow and then losing their confidence and missing.

Looks like a game that needs a composed mind.

I entered a pool comp once for the laugh and when I was called from the lounge to play (best of three) I was horrified to see an audience eagerly awaiting the next games.

Couldn't play at all when people were watching and got hammered by my opponent.

Hows Ted 'The Count' Hankey and Martin 'Wolfie' Adams doing this year?

Also, what makes these darts competitions so interesting to watch is how momentum is a huge part of darts, moreso than any other sport (imo)

You can easily see a nobody beat a champion just because they've got to a certain stage. There are countless amazing comebacks every year, just because they get a little momentum going and they start believing. The crowd gets behind them and we sit back and watch as great television unfolds :)

A game for uneducated skangery looking characters whom have never left the pub since they were 14. I don't like it.

The working class can keep it.

Prince Harry and Zara Philips are fans. Although it may just be a guise in attempting to score brownie points with the commoners.

If Kist keeps this form up he will be good enough for PDC.

Anyone see the PDC semi-finals few weeks ago? EPIC.

I was taken to the darts at Alexandra Palace last year by friends from university. It was my first experience of a darts event and I had no interest in the sport at all, but the atmosphere was really quite special. A great experience and Sky have done quite a remarkable job with the amazing rise in popularity of darts in Britain.

Ah this is gas, was only having a chat with the lads earlier today on whether or not Darts is a sport. Someone used the fact that it's shown on Sky Sports... but then again so is WWE!

We arrived at the conclusion that it's a game more than a sport, if that makes any sense! What are people's stance on this? Do you consider it a sport? Does it take an 'athlete' to compete in a sport?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,075 ✭✭✭Wattle

I love some of the Dutch and Belgian players they used to have. Great facial hair. They looked like roadies for Hawkwind.

For me a sport is something that involves sweating from exertion.

Poker, chess, darts, pool and snooker are games in my estimation.

This subject would make a good thread all of it's own - shure why don't you start one?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,598 ✭✭✭boomkatalog

I like darts, but I'm crap at it, the darts always bounce off the board :(

Watching on telly though? No thanks, but then I don't like watching any sports on telly. I rather playing (or trying to anyway).

You sound like the uneducated one to me, don't know what pubs you go to that allow 14 year olds to drink. I have friends that are in darts leagues and they're definitly not "skangery".

Not being pedantic here, I'm just interested: Motorsport.

Where do the people who define sport as you have stand on this?

I actually did, Mod's closed it. I had a well written OP which ended with the question ''So...Is Darts a Sport?'' The oh so witty retort was ''Yes. Locked.'' I was Bull-ing (lame pun, I know.)

Never seen a fat F1 driver. Went karting recently and was sweating after it and all ache-y for three days after.

    Definitely sport imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,500 ✭✭✭✭DEFTLEFTHAND

F1 drivers have to be in peak physical condition. Two hours of constant concentration and physical assertion while travelling at high speeds. It could cost one their life if they weren't physically adept.

Darts always makes me think of the old saying of it's not a sport unless you sweat.

Strange thing is, they do sweat during darts, from being fat, unhealthy bastards though.

Well I know many pubs that do so, if you're typically designated to the strictness of a city pub or something like that then your lack of knowledge regarding the matter is understandable. From my own personal experience, those who play in darts league and the likes are pretty much how I described them, you also get that from the "pros" and spectators you see on TV.

I shouldn't really have to spell it out like that, but from the inclusion of a rolleyes in your post I knew that you had absolutely no idea what you were talking about.
